Smith named Player of the Year; Wentlent receives all-league honors

CORTLAND – SUNY Cortland senior field hockey back Erin Smith (Greene, Greene Central School) has been chosen as the 2013 State University of New York Athletic Conference Field Hockey Player of the Year.

Smith, a first team all-league player, was joined on the first team by fellow Red Dragons player, junior Abbey Wentlent (Greene, Greene Central School).

Smith finished the season with 13 goals and 12 assists for 38 points as a starter in all 17 games. Despite being a defender, Smith ranked second on the team in goals and points, and tied for first in assists. Smith scored three goals in a win over Elmira and recorded two goals and an assist in a 4-3 overtime win over nationally ranked Skidmore. She earned All-SUNYAC honors four times (first team in 2012 and 2013; second team in 2010 and 2011) and was the 2010 SUNYAC Rookie of the Year. She is ranked 12th all-time at Cortland with 94 career points (33 goals, 28 assists).
