Preparations underway for community Thanksgiving dinner

NEW BERLIN – Every year, the New Berlin United Methodist Church prepares for its Community Thanksgiving Dinner with great success. This year will be no different.
This year’s dinner will start promptly at 11:30 a.m. and continue until 1:30 p.m. On Nov. 28 – Thanksgiving Day – at the First United Methodist Church located at 51 S. Main St. in the Village of New Berlin.
“We're very much like a big family here in the New Berlin area. The dinner is much like any other typical family Thanksgiving dinner get-together and we are not here to promote any sort of religion,” said Becky Reidenbach, correspondent and secretary for the Community Thanksgiving Committee.
Reidenbach said, “The purpose of the event is to promote a sense of community and giving thanks for all who attend. Although the meal is free of charge, It's certainly not exclusively for people who are unable to afford the meal themselves.”
As in past years, not only will the free dinner be available for New Berlin residents, but also neighbors from as far as South New Berlin, Edmeston and Norwich who will be welcomed to celebrate the holiday with a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. “Shut-in” meal deliveries – for those who are unable to travel to the event – will he handled by the individual churches based on proximity.
“Many New Berlin area businesses band together to donate funding and supplies every year in an effort to make the dinner a success, and we want them all to know how much we appreciate their generosity,” said Reidenbach.
Community members who attend will receive a raffle number at the door and prizes will be awarded every 15 minutes as they are called out. “This year, we have prizes donated by Price Chopper, Stewart's Shops, and Save-a-Lot. Some of the major contributers for this year’s event are NBT Bank in New Berlin, Golden Artists Colors and Red Apple,” said Reidenbach.
Area church members from Columbus Community Church, St. Andrews Episcopal Church, St. Theresa's Catholic of New Berlin, and St. Matthews Church of South New Berlin make up the Community Thanksgiving Committee. Members meet throughout the year to coordinate the yearly dinner – held for the past 10 years – to plan the meal and solicit local businesses for donations.
This year's dinner will be held in remembrance of the late Betsey Westfall, the late committee treasurer who unexpectedly passed this year following the committee’s first meeting. Westfall donated many years of service to the Community Thanksgiving Committee and was integral in the past successes of the event.
“Last year, we had a couple stop in after seeing the sign that we put out on Thanksgiving Day. They were just passing through town and decided to see what was going on,” Reidenbach said. “Patrons like those, who could be anywhere else on such an important day but decide for that day that they are going to be a part of our community, mean quite a bit to us.”
