Hansen, Garcia earn MOW honors at Clyde Cole tourney
OXFORD – Nate Hansen of Oxford beat a returning Section IV champion, and Frankie Garcia of Norwich rolled over the competition. The two juniors shared Most Outstanding Wrestler honors at the 51st Annual Clyde Cole Wrestling Tournament at Oxford Academy Saturday.
Hansen (113) was one of four Blackhawks to reach the finals, but the only one to finish on top of the podium. Coming off a dual meet loss earlier in the week, Hansen showed no adverse effects on his way to a 10-6 decision over B-G/A/H’s Chris Cirigliano.
Cirigliano showed an aptitude for explosive moves in winning a sectional title this past February, but it was Hansen who roused a partisan, capacity crowd getting a nearfall in the opening period, then adding a reversal and another nearfall in the second period to build a 9-5 lead. It was the second straight year Hansen beat Cirigliano in this tournament, a fact that must have crossed his mind before the finals match.
“The thing about Nate is that he is not afraid of the moment to hit the big move,” said Oxford coach Craig Tefft. “Sometimes it works in his favor, and sometimes it doesn’t Tonight it did a couple of times. We knew going in we had a good shot, and Nate wrestled like that.”
Norwich also had four finalists with Garcia (152) earning a second straight Clyde Cole title. Other than an 8-1 semifinals victory, Garcia was untouchable beating Shenendehowa’s Anthony DiNallo by technical fall, 15-0, in the finals. Garcia added to a 2-0 lead with nearfall points at the end of the first period. The momentum continued in the second with another five-point combination buoyed by three more nearfall points on his way to a shutout.
“Frankie looked good the whole weekend,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch. “We knew there would be guys jumping around to avoid Tristan (Rifanburg), but Frankie is right there. The finals match wasn’t even close, and the same thing happened in the finals last year. Frankie has worked hard in the offseason and done his homework. He knows what he has to do going forward.”
NHS brothers Ty Rifanburg (99) and Tristan Rifanburg (145) won championships for Norwich lifting their club to a sixth-place team finish.
Ty Rifanburg beat Dalen Geislinger, 3-1, in an all-Norwich final. Down 1-0, Rifanburg gained three back points early in the third with a spladle, and held the pinning combination for nearly the entire period to knock off a defending Clyde Cole champion.
Tristan Rifanburg notched his third Clyde Cole championship beating a game Kevin Parker of Shenendehowa, 5-1. Rifanburg earned a first-period takedown, and controlled Parker from the top position the rest of the way. Rifanburg worked a patented tilt for three back points in the second period, and narrowly missed more back points that would have turned the match into a blowout. “Parker is a really tough kid, and we were hoping to get this matchup,” Hagenbuch said. “We wanted a good matchup, and we got one.”
B-G/A/H only had one other finalist, Madison Hoover (138), and Hoover rallied from an early deficit to edge Jonah Fluger of Shenendehowa, 4-3. Fluger was assessed a stalling point in the second period – from the top position – and Hoover scored on a reversal to take the lead for good.
In one of the more unusual finishes, Unadilla Valley’s Alex Avolio (220) topped Oxford’s Garyn Huntley by disqualification.
Huntley nearly pinned Avolio in the opening moments with a takedown and nearfall to lead 4-0. The rest of the way, Huntley maintained top position. Along the way, Avolio picked up two points on Huntley’s technical violations as well as a stalling call on Huntley. With under 15 seconds left, Huntley was tagged with another technical violation that gave Avolio the tying point. After wrestling resumed, Avolio picked up an apparent escape with one second remaining. However, UV coach Jim DuVall walked to the scorer’s table and apprised the referee that Huntley’s third technical violation should have disqualified him before the final sequence. The referee agreed, and awarded Avolio the victory.
“Alex has been getting better and better, and the good thing is that although he didn’t need it, he did get the escape at the end of the match,” DuVall said
Shenendehowa, one of the top Division One wrestling teams in New York, took the team title with Queensbury placing second, B-G/A/H taking third, and Oxford fourth.
