New Berlin community unites for Spirit of Christmas

NEW BERLIN – The annual Spirt of Christmas Celebration in the Village of New Berlin aims to fill the hearts and sprits of area children again this year, despite the decline in the economy and return of cold weather to upstate New York. From 9 a.m. Until noon on Saturday, Dec. 21, families can join in on an event devised to make the holidays special for everyone.
“Often families in our rural area are struggling due to a variety of situations that arise during the winter,” said Father Chuck Taylor, rector of St. Andrew's, St. Matthew's and Emmanuel Episcopal Churches. “With the rising cost of heating fuel, groceries and the staples needed to survive, some people just don't have the means to give and celebrate the season, and we're here to do whatever we can to be sure that they can.”
For many years, individual churches have taken on the responsibility of helping families in need during the Christmas season. But this year, the combined efforts of several area churches – in concert with Unadilla Valley Central Schools and some New Berlin based businesses – families and children will benefit once again as they celebrate.
Taylor, along with Mrs. Marty Benson and New Berlin Mayor Terry Potter, serve as directors for the charitable program which has served hundreds of area families and cthildren in need. According to Taylor, the program works “hand in hand” with the Unadilla Central School District, which serves as one of the main outreach sources, directly communicating with children and families who may benefit from the program.
Corporate funding is also a key factor in making sure the program remains a success year after year. “Chobani and Golden Artist Colors continue to give back to our community, and it's important to us that the public remains aware of how much they do to help our community,” said Taylor.
The Spirit of Christmas program offers donated food baskets to make a holiday meal, toys, as well as new socks, hats and gloves for all ages. All gifts will be wrapped and ready to be placed under the tree.
“We're glad to be part of small community that can come together and assemble for those in need,” said Taylor, “and this is just another way we can work collectively to help lift the spirits of the disadvantaged in our small community throughout the Christmas season.”
Taylor mentioned that there's still time for families to sign up or donate to the Spirit of Christmas this year. For more information, call 847-6361.
