Defending MAC champion UV opens with win

Unadilla Valley 63, Delhi 33
DELHI – Defending MAC champion Unadilla Valley began defense of its title Monday night with a 30-point win over Delhi.
Senior Taylor Davis scored 14 of her 21 points after halftime, and first-year varsity player Breanna Christian gave the Storm a spark in the second quarter.
“We started slow, but once we got the jitters out, we played pretty well,” said UV coach Brandi Backus. “We got into tons of foul trouble, and that was how Delhi scored most of its points.”
UV expanded a four-point first-quarter lead to 15 at halftime as Christian scored all eight of her points – including a three-pointer – in the quarter. Emily Converse added 11 points for UV in the victory.

Delhi 63, G-MU 31
COPES CORNERS - Delhi took command of Monday’s game at G-MU in the second quarter outscoring the Raiders 23-4.
Jacob Zinkievich and Alex Cantwell scored 10 points apiece to lead a balanced Delhi attack. “Their press gave us a hard time, and we had quite a few turnovers that allowed them to get some easy buckets,” said G-MU coach Matt Johnson.
Nathaniel O’Hara had a big night offensively for G-MU finishing with a game-high 19 points. G-MU plays Morris on Friday.

Boys’ Swimming

Norwich 94, Susquehanna Valley 69
NORWICH – Norwich began a busy week of meets topping Susquehanna Valley Monday evening for its second win of the season.
Norwich won the first 10 events, and then swam exhibition over the final two, said head coach Kevin Diefenbacher. Jon Manwarren swam a personal-best time to win the 500 freestyle in 5:38.09, and Curtis Woodard took the 200 individual medley with his lowest time, 2:14.67. Killian Benedict, Joe Stagliano, and Ricky Finnegan also won individual events for Norwich (2-0), who have two more meets scheduled over the next three days.
“We changed the lineup around and put some guys in new events, and they responded well,” Diefenbacher said. “”Flexibility in the lineup is what we want so we can get ready for the bigger meets.”
Norwich hosts Sherburne-Earlville on Wednesday.

EARLVILLE – Vernon-Verona-Sherrill captured the decisive third game to defeat Sherburne-Earlville’s girls Monday afternoon at Hi-Skor Lanes in Earlville.
Liesa Armstrong and Mandi LaClair had 500-plus series’ for the Marauders (1-1). Armstrong notched a 511 triple, while LaClair added a 501.
