Four local wrestlers win titles at Windsor
WINDSOR - Four defending Section IV champions finished the first half of the wrestling with championships at the 57th Annual Windsor Tournament.
Norwich juniors Tristan Rifanburg (138) and Frankie Garcia (152) captured titles leading the Tornado matmen to a sixth-place team finish among 29 teams entered. Greene’s Christian Dietrich (182) rolled to a title, and B-G/Afton/Harpursville’s Chris Cirigliano built momentum toward the second half of the season with a win at 106 pounds.
It was Rifanburg who was likely the most dominant of all champions at the longest continuous running high school wrestling tournament in New York. All of his victories Friday and Saturday were decided by pinfall or technical fall, and he dispatched Zack Bendick of Union-Endicott in the finals, 15-0 in just 2:36 of mat action.
Garcia, though, had a tougher road to his top spot on the podium. After cruising through to the finals, Garcia was taken to overtime by Huntington’s Brandon Mendez. A takedown in the overtime period gave Garcia a 4-2 victory. “We saw Mendez’s brother a couple of years ago, so we knew this was going to be a tough match,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch. “We brought just nine guys to the tournament, and our goal was to finish in the top nine. From that standpoint, we exceeded expectations.”
Dietrich, similar to Rifanburg, was not seriously tested, but was taken the distance in his finals match beating Addison’s Trey DuVall, 5-0. Cirigliano, meanwhile, made a successful foray back into the 106-pound division. Four weeks removed from a second-place finish at 113 pounds in the Clyde Cole tourney, Cirigliano was in complete control of his finals bout routing Tucker Amato of Indian River, 10-1.
