Oneonta wins shootout over UV
Unadilla Valley Tournament
Oneonta 85, Unadilla Valley 77 (finals)
S-E 63, Oxford 52 (consolation finals)
NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley was unable to match Oneonta’s prolific offense falling to the Yellowjackets in UV Holiday Tournament championship game Saturday night.
Tournament MVP Jordan Gutierrez had 33 points in the title win over the Storm, and reserve George Foti had five three balls and a season-high 21 points.
Gutierrez scored 62 points in the two-day tournament, and Oneonta’s offense eclipsed 50 points in the second half in each of its wins. Still, it took a strong closing finish by Oneonta to close out an upstart UV club that has just two losses this season – both to much larger schools.
“I told the team that I was proud of the way we battled, and we need to have that level of intensity in our league games so we can continue to improve,” said UV coach Matt Osborne.
Gutierrez and Foti offset the monster night from UV sophomore David Dufresne, who scored 32 points before fouling out in the final 20 seconds. Trailing Oneonta throughout the fourth quarter, Dufresne’s three closed the score to within 76-74. Albert Odero hit two free throws, and Gutierrez hit a three so deep and so far beyond the three-point arc, it nearly eminated from Otsego County. Oneonta closed on 9-3 run, and UV struggled from the line making one out of six free throws in the last 45 seconds.
S-E rebounded from a 79-65 loss to Oneonta in Friday’s opening game with a win over intracounty rival Oxford in the consolation game. Kevin Vibbard Jr. had a team-high 16 points for S-E, and Ben Khoury added a season-best 15 points.
Oxford sophomore Kevin Davis fashioned a career night in the loss scoring 25 points and pulling down 16 rebounds. He was named to the all-tournament team.
Friday, Oneonta scored 56 points in the second half to defeat the Marauders. Gutierrez scored 29 and Paul Bischoff netted 24. Austin Jasper bucketed 20 for S-E and Vibbard had a season-high 19 points. Vibbard was subsequently named an all-tournament pick.
UV went to its full-court press to run away from Oxford, 63-40, in Friday’s second game. The Storm outscored the Blackhawks 45-9 over the middle two periods to open a 36-point lead. Dufresne had 16 and Nate Shackleton 14 in the victory.
Matt Moore’s 14 points paced Oxford.

Downsville Tournament
Roscoe 49, G-MU 43
Downsville 48, G-MU 36
DOWNSVILLE – G-MU nearly erased a 27-point halftime deficit losing to Roscoe Saturday in the consolation game of the Downsville Tournament.
The Raiders hit all five of their threes in the fourth – four from Nate O’Hara – scoring 25 points in the last quarter. “We were moving the ball and (our players) were moving without the ball in the fourth quarter,” said G-MU coach Matt Johnson. “Our offense was stagnant in the first half, and we were relying on a couple of people to make shots instead of moving the ball.”
O’Hara had 14 of his 16 points in the final quarter including four three-pointers, and Christopher Cole added 13 markers.
After a strong opening quarter, the Raiders’ offense went into a funk the final three quarters in Friday’s loss to Downsville. “We had some turnovers in the second and third quarters, and that led to some easy baskets for them,” Johnson said.

Sherburne-Earlville 68, Chenango Forks 51
Sherburne-Earlville 62, Susquehanna Valley 54
Susquehanna Valley 55, Unadilla Valley 20
Chenango Forks 60, Unadilla Valley 54
NEW BERLIN – Sherburne-Earlville passed its toughest tests of the season beating a pair of Southern Tier Athletic Conference schools for the Unadilla Valley tourney title.
Coming off a hard-fought win over Susquehanna Valley Friday night, the unbeaten Marauders shook a pesky Forks club in the second half. Leading by four at the break, S-E whipped off a 12-2 spurt in the first three minutes of the third, and extended a four-point lead to 13 heading to the fourth. Lilly Berg scored 12 in the third quarter on her way to a team-high 16 points. Savannah Irwin had all 12 of her points in the second half, Jordan van Althuis also had an even dozen, and Mattie Dowdall scored 11 – all in the first half.
“We knew Chenango Forks would keep coming at us,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “We did a good job of pushing the ball in the second half.”
Friday, the Marauders overcame some foul trouble and a late run by Susquehanna Valley to advance to the title game. Irwin scored 21 points, van Althuis added 11, and Mikayla Solloway had 10 markers. “Every time Susquehanna Valley made a run, we responded,” Mulligan said. “It was good to have a close game and to overcome some adversity.”
Along with its perfect 8-0 record, S-E is a recent entry into the state rankings. Mulligan isn’t completely surprised by the strong start. “I knew we had the pieces in place, and we’ve been fortunate to not have a lot of kids have off nights,” the S-E coach. “This is a very unselfish team.”
Unadilla Valley was unable to slow the Blue Devils’ Alex Yoest in Friday’s defeat. Yoest scored 19 of her game-high 27 points in the second half, and made five free throws in the fourth to help close the Storm out. Taylor Davis scored 20 for UV and Corrine Izard 16 in the loss.
In Saturday’s consolation game, UV was held to its lowest point total in several years in a blowout defeat to Sus Valley. Erin Nolan’s 13 points paced a balanced SV lineup.

Kazalski Tournament
Bainbridge-Guilford 49, Whitney Point 47
Bainbridge-Guilford 39, Marathon 35
BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge-Guilford squeezed out a pair of victories this weekend to claim the Kazalski Tournament title.
One night after edging Whitney Point, Abbey Smith hit a late free throw for the Bobcats to seal the victory over Marathon.
Tournament MVP, Morgan Bullis, had 16 points and 11 rebounds. “We’ve been waiting for (Morgan) to crank it up offensively,” said B-G coach Bob Conway of his leading scorer. “Both teams worked really hard defensively in the second half, and neither team could find a shooter to put the ball in the bucket.”
B-G received a big contribution from freshman Becca Reyes to advance to the title game. Reyes, playing her first varsity game, hit her fourth three of the game with a minute left to put her team up by two. Megan Ferrara added two free throws with under 30 seconds to play for what would be the winning margin. Whitney Point closed the gap to two points, and then rebounded a missed B-G free throw with 15 seconds left to give it a chance to tie or take the lead. The Golden Eagles failed to get off a quality shot as time expired. “We did a nice job of not giving them an easy, open look,” Conway said of the final moments.
Reyes had 16 points, Taylor Palmatier scored 10, and Bullis led with 12 rebounds. B-G plays at Chenango Valley Friday.
