Knights of Columbus free throw championship slated
NORWICH – All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in the 2014 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Norwich YMCA.
Since 1972, the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship has been sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions. Last year more than 120,000 sharpshooters participated in over 3,600 local competitions.
All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the event. Participants are required to present proof of age and written parental consent. Entry forms can be completed the day of the contest.
The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic family fraternal service organization with over 1.8 million members in 14,500 local councils. Last year, Knights donated over 70 million volunteer hours and $162 million to charitable and benevolent causes, sponsoring projects to benefit their church, councils, communities, culture of life, families and youth.
Youth running class scheduled at the YMCA
NORWICH – A class stressing the fundamentals of running will be held each Sunday from 12:30-1:30 p.m. through August, 2014 at the Norwich YMCA.
The class, led by longtime Norwich coach Mickey James, will emphasize stretching, proper use of arms, change of direction, and cutting. The program is free and is open to boys and girls of all ages.
Cortland Crush hot stove wrapup
CORTLAND – Graciously hosted by the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks Lodge of Cortland, the Cortland Crush, one of two new NYCBL teams added beginning in 2014, introduced its front office and large contingent of players at its inaugural hot stove event. The event afforded the team an opportunity to outline its approach and the role it wishes to play in the community.
“We want to leverage the vast amount of resources, and become a resource, to the City of Cortland,” said team manager Bill McConnell.
Over 80 people braved the frigid temperatures to come out and talk about baseball. The Crush management team outlined how the team will work closely with the community to provide summer baseball camps and help ensure equipment is readily available to the community’s youth baseball programs.
Among the players invited to participate on the team is Norwich graduate and varsity baseball standout, Ben Barnes.
