Cheer for a cure at NHS Coaches vs. Cancer Games

NORWICH – The Norwich High School Varsity Cheerleaders have challenged the NHS boys and girls varsity and junior varsity basketball teams to play in the Fourth Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Games at the NHS Jack Jones Gymnasium.
The girls varsity and junior varsity teams will be opposing Seton Catholic on Tuesday, Jan. 14, and the boys varsity and junior varsity teams will be opposing Johnson City on Friday, Jan. 17. The junior varsity games will start at 6 p.m. and the varsity games will start at 7:45 pm.
The Norwich, Seton Catholic and Johnson City coaching staff members will make an unusual fashion statement at this week’s games by wearing sneakers while coaching on the sidelines. They are joining thousands of other basketball coaches nationwide, who will be wearing their sneakers to raise awareness about cancer and the American Cancer Society’s effort to save lives.
The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
Since its inception in 1993, high school and college coaches and their families across the country have raised nearly $87 million for the American Cancer Society.
The NHS Varsity Cheerleaders have spearheaded this event for the past four years. The girls continue to reach out to their community to help raise awareness for the American Cancer Society’s cause.
At this year’s games, the girls will be wearing special “Cheer For A Cure” uniforms – which is the name of their Relay For Life team. The girls have also painted signs that will be hanging in the gym, to show the many different types of cancer.
“We will be reading various facts and statistics in relation to Chenango County and there will be a moment of silence prior to the National Anthem at the Varsity games,” said NHS Cheerleading Coach, Marie DeSarro.
The Cheerleading Booster Club is holding a bake sale during the games and all the proceeds will go to the cheerleader’s RLF team. The cheerleaders will also take donations in the stands during the games’ halftimes. The Girls Basketball Team Boosters will be donating the proceeds from their 50/50 raffle at Tuesday’s game to the cheerleader’s RFL team as well.
“Every year I say the same thing… It is more important than ever to make people aware at a very early age of the different types of cancer and some of the symptoms surrounding them,” said DeSarro.
“It is also important to also promote nutrition, exercise and body health – all these things taken into account at an early age, may help prevent different types of cancer. Knowing the steps you can take to stay healthy will only help if learned at a young age,” added DeSarro.
Every year the NHS Cheerleading Team try to do a little more in raising awareness and support for the fight against cancer. DeSarro says that they now have teams buy-in each year, because they look forward to helping in the cause. Her hope is to keep students educated about cancer at a young age, so they learn ways to keep themselves healthy and understand the signs and symptoms to help others get checked.
Said DeSarro, “Cancer is everywhere. Everyone knows someone, or knows someone, who knows someone. We all have a tie, and we all have our reasons why we want to get rid of this awful disease.”
There will be no admission to attend the games, but donations will be taken throughout the game. Proceeds will go to the NHS Cheerleaders RLF Team.
