Norwich bench sparks second-quarter getaway

Norwich 55, Seton Catholic Central 33
NORWICH – Norwich’s bench sparked a dominant second quarter, and veterans Breanna Cashman along with Jennifer Borfitz led the way in a 22-point victory over visiting Seton Catholic Central Tuesday night.
The Saints clung to a two-point lead until NHS reserve Savannah Williams drove for a layup with 1.3 seconds left in the first quarter to knot the game at 12-12.
Williams duplicated that driving layup to start the second stanza kicking off an 11-2 spurt that included a bucket by reserve Kassidy Seary, and a three-point play by fellow reserve Makenzie Maynard. Filling in the gap was Cashman, who had all 14 of her points in the first half as Norwich stretched its lead to 35-20 at the break.
“We had some foul trouble in the first half, and we really had kids step up and give us big minutes,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett. “ One of the the things we’ve talked about with all our kids is you never know when your number is going to be called. We have so many kids that on any given night can give us big sparks.”
Norwich also broke the Saints’ pressure with ease, and the unimpeded drives to the basket for layups almost looked like stealing.
Borfitz scored eight of her points in the second half as she and Cashman matched team-high honors with 14 points. Cashman also had eight blocked shots in the victory.
Norwich’s junior varsity team won for the ninth time this season beating the Saints, 59-48. Bridget Murphy led NHS with 20 points, Cara Evans bucketed 12, and Caroline Stewart netted 10.

Johnson City 53, Norwich 24
JOHNSON CITY – Norwich gave up four forfeits in the first five matches in a dual meet loss to Johnson City Tuesday night.
Injuries and illness kept Norwich from fielding a complete lineup, said head coach Terry Hagenbuch. “It was a little of everything that kept guys out,” he said. “It’s tough to come back against a team like Johnson City when you’re down 30-0 out of the gate.”
Dalen Geislinger (106) returned to his winning ways after seeing tough competition at the Eastern States Classic last weekend. Geislinger pinned Tim Reed in 1:57. “Dalen is still young, and this is what he needed to get back on track,” Hagenbuch said.
Norwich hosts Oxford Thursday.
