Windsor 37, Norwich 36
NORWICH – Windsor won the final four matches to rally for a one-point victory over Norwich Thursday at Norwich High School.
The Tornado jumped out to a big lead getting back-to-back pins from Tristan Rifanburg (152) and Frank Garcia (160), and a decision from Colton Langille (170).
Several Norwich wrestlers were moved up in weight to fill the lineup, and that move nearly paid off. “We need to shuffle the lineup,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch. “It came down to a couple matches where we gave up an escape to make it a major decision, and there was another match we lost that we thought we might win. Other than that, everything fell where we needed it. Windsor just won one more match than us.”
Dalen Geislinger (99), Ty Rifanburg (106), and Zach Mills (113) added pins. For Mills, it was his first varsity victory. Cole Rifanburg’s decision win at 120 pounds had Norwich in front, 36-18.
Norwich competes in the STAC Tournament today at Union-Endicott High School.

NORWICH – Norwich polished off one of its best regular seasons in over a decade, and did so on senior recognition night.
Seniors Caleb Miller, Nick Mooney, Joe Stagliano, Greg Todd, and Curtis Woodard were all recognized before the meet, and the last four of that group all figured heavily in Thursday’s win.
“This year, we’ve been pretty lucky to have the guys that we have,” said Norwich coach Kevin Diefenbacher.
In the final meet before sectional meet preparations begin, Norwich amassed seven more personal-best times. Prime examples were Stagliano, who won the 50 free in a season-low 23.77, and Dan Zieno, who took the 100 free in 54.44.
Woodard was a double winner in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, Mooney grabbed a first in the breaststroke, Ricky Finnegan captured the diving competition, and Killian Benedict touched home first in the backstroke.
Sectionals begin Feb. 12 at Owego, and Diefenbacher expects several top finishes. “All of our relays should be right there, and we have a lot of other guys who should be in the top three, no problem,” the NHS coach said.
Norwich finishes the regular season with a 9-1 record.
