NHS crowns three champs at STAC Championships

ENDICOTT – Norwich had four finalists and crowned three champions to place fourth overall at the STAC Championships, Saturday at Union-Endicott High School.
Dalen Geislinger (99), Tristan Rifanburg (138), and Frankie Garcia (152) won titles for Norwich. Ty Rifanburg (99) placed second losing to Geislinger in an all-Norwich final, Cole Rifanburg (120) was fourth, and Zach Mills (106) along with Brad Chesebro (220) took fifth to lead NHS.
In a rematch of the Clyde Cole Tournament final – won by Rifanburg – Geislinger turned the tables on his wrestling-room workout mate with a second-period pin.
Tristan Rifanburg steamrolled his way into the finals with a pin and two technical falls. In a return meeting with Elmira’s Curtis Grant from an early-season matchup, Rifanburg was much more impressive against the 2013 Division I state place finisher winning 8-3. Earlier this year, Rifanburg rallied for an 8-6 win over Grant.
Garcia had the most dominant road to victory. After three straight pins to reach the finals, Garcia won by major decision over Vestal’s Owen Jarrold, 12-4, to take the crown.
Cole Rifanburg dropped a pair of one-point decisions in the semifinals and consolation finals; Chesebro lost a one-point decision in the semifinals to the top seed before settling for fifth, while Mills, in his first varsity tournament, won four matches over the weekend to give Norwich seven place finishers.
Midstate Athletic Conference Championships
DEPOSIT – B-G/Afton/Harpursville and Oxford each won four individual titles, and placed second and fourth respectively at the Midstate Athletic Conference tourney, Saturday at Deposit High School.
Defending Section IV champion, Chris Cirigliano (106) led the Bears’ roll of titleists winning a 9-0 decision over Deposit-Hancock’s Stephen McKee. B-G/A/H then won three straight weight classes with Jacob Andrews placing first at 132, Madison Hoover won at 138, and Jamie Griswold added the final title for his club at 145.
Joe Nelson (113), a 2012 sectional champion and state place finisher, showed no ill effects of his lingering injuries this season pinning Deposit-Hancock’s Brandon Macumber in the finals. Nik Hansen (160) stunned Sidney’s Nik Jump with a pinfall win in the finals; Joe Jackson (182) handed Kai Sabada just his second loss of the season with another pin, and Garyn Huntley (220) won a rematch with UV’s Alex Avolio taking an 8-1 decision. Avolio edged Huntley in the Clyde Cole Tournament finals in early December.
