Arson suspect in custody following investigation

NORWICH – A man believed to be responsible for a fire that destroyed a portion of a local business on the morning after Thanksgiving was arrested in the City of Elmira, according to the New York State Police.
Michael J.C. Golotty, 25, Norwich, was arrested after an investigation into a fire at the Storage Center LLC on county Route 32 in the Town of Norwich that occurred during the early morning hours of Nov. 29, 2013.
Golotty was charged with one count of third degree arson, a class A felony; one count of third degree burglary, a class D felony; and a total 40 counts of third degree criminal mischief, class E felonies – one count for each of the storage lockers where content was destroyed as a result of the blaze, troopers said.
Chenango County District Attorney Joe McBride said, “Mr. Golotty is being charged for allegedly knowingly and intentionally setting fire to a storage locker. At this time we have no information that leads us to believe that the incident was drug related.”
McBride said, “Mr. Golotty was arraigned in Norwich Town Court and sent to Chenango County jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail ... A felony hearing has been scheduled for him on Thursday, Feb. 6 and the matter will be presented to a grand jury for indictment later within the month.”
State police have indicated that the total estimated damages exceed $300,000 pending insurance claims for some unit renters that have not yet been completed.
Fire crews from the City of Norwich Fire Department were called to 6108 County Road 32 in Norwich where thick, black smoke rolled out of the metal storage structure.
With mutual aid from the Chenango County Bureau of Fire, and fire departments from Plymouth, South New Berlin and Oxford, fire crews were met with the challenge of opening 40 locked metal doors to access the working fire.
According to Chenango County Supervisor of Fire Investigation Clifford Jones, the matter had initially been assigned to the Chenango County Fire Bureau, but was later handed over to the New York State Police for further investigation into the alleged arson.
The incident had a resounding effect upon the community when it came to light that adjoining storage units were being used to store an estimated $8,000 worth of donated toys for the local chapter of the nonprofit Toys for Tots charity, which distributes toys for children of disadvantaged families nationwide.
While the alleged arson occurred only weeks before Christmas, the Chenango County community banded together with the help of residents and local businesses to more than make up for the loss of toys. The response enabled Toys for Tots to have one of the most successful years on record.
