Colorscape Chenango puts out call for artists

NORWICH – One of Chenango County's crowned-jewels – the Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival – is preparing for what organizers are anticipating will be the biggest and most appealing incarnation of the festival's 20-year history.
According to Peg Finnegan, Executive Director of Colorscape Chenango, Applications have been mailed out and all artists and crafters alike are invited to apply to jury selection for the 20th Annual Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival, which will take place in East and West Parks of downtown Norwich on the weekend of Sept. 6 and 7.
“We are planning on having something very special this year on the bandstand to commemorate the 20th year celebration,” said Finnegan.
Entry deadline for juried exhibit is March 7, with notification of the jury’s decision mailed by April 11. Late applications may be accepted into categories where space is available at the discretion of the jury.
Finnegan indicated that only an anticipated maximum of 115 exhibitors will be invited to participate in the 2014 festival of all things artistic, and encourages artists wishing to participate to submit their applications as soon as possible.
Applications are available at various locations throughout the area, including the Chenango County Council of the Arts and Made In Chenango in Norwich; Gallery 3-2-1 in Oxford; and Artware and the Craftsman’s Guild in Oneonta. Prospective applicants can also request an application by calling 336-FEST, or by sending an e-mail request to info@colorscape.org. The application form can also be downloaded from the festival’s web site at www.colorscape.org. There is a non-refundable $15 jury fee.
Potential applicants should note that completed applications must be accompanied by three digital images which accurately represent the work to be exhibited, plus a booth display image. Images may be submitted on a non-returnable CD or by e-mail to info@colorscape.org. Specifications are outlined in detail on the application form.
As in past years, jury decisions are based on creativity, workmanship, continuity of work and overall appearance of display. All jury decisions are final. A booth space at Colorscape is 12’x12’ and the fee is $175.
“Festival-goers like to see artists doing what they do; the public always enjoys the interaction with the artists,” said Finnegan. She noted that, to better attract artists and vendors who preform during the festival, the Colorscape Committee often allots performing venders with and extra wide or a corner plot for their tent.
Finnegan said, “When everyone gets involved, it's great.”
Crowd participation and demonstrations also work to the artists’ advantage by enabling them to score higher when they are judged by the juried panel. Contributers who score the highest take their fair share of the more than $6,000 in award money as an added bonus.
Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival is an outdoor exhibition of arts and fine crafts. Its organizers are dedicated to providing a show of the highest quality in an interactive atmosphere, featuring artist demonstrations, workshops, educational activities for children and adults, live entertainment and quality food vending. Colorscape attracts an estimated 12,000 visitors each year.
