Unadilla Valley 65, Greene 57
GREENE – Greene had no defense for Unadilla Valley, and David Dufresne in particular, in the fourth quarter Friday night.
Dufresne, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, scored 15 of his game-high 28 points in the final quarter as UV stormed into the Midstate Athletic Conference title game.
UV meets Unatego Saturday at SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m.
“I was pretty happy with our defense, Dufresne just went off in the final quarter,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We tried man, we tried zone; he just made everything.”
It seemed like every UV player made everything during a 27-point final quarter. Aside from Dufresne bombing away from outside and slashing to the rim on the inside, Nick White buried a trifecta, and Nate Shackleton drove inside and canned a hoop over two larger Greene defenders.
To cap the game, UV was 10-for-12 from the foul line over the last two minutes. “We shot the ball pretty well, and we made our free throws,” said UV coach Matt Osborne. “That was the biggest difference from the first time we played (Greene).”
In a 63-50 win at UV two weeks earlier, Greene used its superior inside size to control the game. For one quarter – the first – that strategy was again effective. Brandon Davis, a 6-foot-3 senior, scored 16 in the previous win over UV. Davis had two early buckets, but picked up his second foul 4 ½ minutes into the game, and was forced to take a seat for the rest of the first half. Colin Brooks, though, maintained Davis’ early effectiveness scoring three close-range hoops as the Trojans took a 16-8 lead into the second quarter.
Shackleton, though, carried the Storm back into contention. Shack had his team’s first 12 points of the second quarter hitting two threes and making 4 of 4 free throws drawing his team to 21-20. Dufresne scored on a layup and hit two free throws putting UV up 24-23, but Luke Erickson tied the game for Greene at halftime making a single free throw in the quarter’s final minute.
UV led through most of the third quarter before four straight free throws from Zach Wentlent and Joe Miranda gave Greene its last lead, 37-36.
UV reserve Jared Hanslmaier was fouled on a drive to the basket as time expired in the third. Hanslmaier hit both charity tosses as the Storm reclaimed the lead for good.
Shackleton finished with 16 points and White had 15.
Greene had four players score in double figures led by Davis’ 14. Wentlent had 13, Brooks scored 11, and Cameron Race added 10.
“We had four guys score in double figures, we just didn’t have anyone get consistently hot like (UV) did,” Smith said. “Unadilla Valley is playing well right now.”
Greene will host Sidney on Wednesday.

SHERBURNE - On senior recognition night, the Marauders capped their second unbeaten run through Center State Conference play in three years with a blowout win over Adirondack Friday.
With Adirondack forcing the tempo, the Marauders converted one easy basket after another to establish a 26-14 lead after one quarter.
"Adirondack needed a win to qualify for the postseason, so I think they thought their only chance to beat us was to come right at us and make it a brawl," said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. "It was a physical game, and I was proud of how we kept our composure and handled their pressure. We had a lot of easy baskets."
Austin Jasper scored 12 points in the first quarter and Julienne Alsheimer added eight. All of the points came at the end of a press-breaker. "It was pass, pass, pass, layup," Vibbard said summing up the first half action.
Jasper led with 18 points, Cody Marango chipped in with 13, and Alsheimer scored 10. Winners of seven straight games, S-E (15-3) is idle until the Section III playoffs. SHERBURNE - The Marauders clinched the Center State Conference Division One title Friday night, and did so with its most prolific offensive performance in school history.
S-E scored 34 points in the opening quarter and had 53 by halftime en route to its first 90-plus point game.
"It was just one of those nights where everyone was clicking on offense," said S-E coach Karen Mulligan, whose club raised its unbeaten record to 17-0.
Mattie Dowdall, Jordan van Althuis, and Savannah Irwin hit threes on the Marauders' first three possessions of the game putting the host club up 9-0 just 90 seconds into the game. Center Lilly Berg scored 13 in the first quarter and Dowdall had eight.
Senior Mikayla Solloway led the way with 21 points, 13 of those coming in the second half to go with 10 rebounds. Dowdall hit six threes finishing with a career-high 20 points, and Berg scored 17 points. Irwin, meanwhile, may have set a team record for assists. She had 15 helpers to go with her 10 points.
Saturday, the Marauders established a new team record for wins in a season, and extended their unbeaten run to 18-0 with a win at Clinton.
Bridgette McDaniel gave S-E a lift off the bench scoring seven points in a 14-5 second quarter that helped open a 13-point halftime lead.
Clinton elected to play an extended zone to nullify S-E’s outside shooting, and that allowed McDaniel to roam free on the weak side of the baseline. “We talked about having an emotional letdown after winning the division the night before, and their wasn’t as much intensity in this game,” Mulligan said. “It was a whole different atmosphere, but we made some good plays.”
McDaniel’s inside mate, Berg, led S-E with 19 points, McDaniel had 13, and Irwin scored 12 points and dished out eight assists.
S-E will likely host at Section III Class B playoff game later this week.
