Cornell students visit Raymond
GREENE – Living up to its slogan, The Raymond Corporation continues to strive “above and beyond” as the Toyota-owned North American leader in electric lift trucks joined forces recently with grad students to assist in furthering their education and enriching knowledge base in the workplace of the real world.
On February 12, 2014, students participating in the semester in strategic operations (SSO) immersion program from The Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, toured The Raymond Corporation’s manufacturing facility in Greene.
Students observed first hand how Raymond utilizes the Toyota Production System (TPS) principles to achieve operational excellence in manufacturing.
“One of the TPS principles is the process of continuous improvement. Students are able to observe how management at Raymond is fully committed to this process, how the employees are motivated to participate and the manner in which the results are communicated to the company,” said Nagesh Gavirneni, Associate Professor of Operations Management at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management.
“Raymond is a perfect example of innovation in product development, efficiency in operation and excellence in customer relationship,” said Gavirneni in a news release.
Although Raymond Corporation draws most of its workforce from inside Chenango County, they also maintain great relationships with Cornell, in addition to Binghamton University, and Broome Community College, according to Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Tim Combs.
The Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management has partnered with Raymond for more than 15 years in the SSO immersion program. Raymond and Cornell continue to collaborate on various programs to further promote collaboration in industry and academics.
Combs said, “The lift truck business has been very strong. The best year for material equipment sales was 2006, and we came within a couple thousand units of achieving that again this year. Almost everything or anything you have touched has been moved with a forklift. It's been a really good thing.”
Raymond Corporations Greene plant and company headquarters employs hundreds of workers in Chenango County.
President of Operations and Engineering, Michael Field, comments on the growth of the company's work force in recent years and said, “The employment here in Greene went from 750 employees to more than 1,500 over the last 36 months. We have numerous investments to deal with that growth and are increasing our capacity.”
Due to the increase in employees and production in the last few years, Field says the Greene plant alone produced 15,000 forklift trucks in 2013.
