Patriot Guard Riders salute local authorities

NORWICH – The local chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders, a nonprofit organization committed to honoring the country's bravest, paid respect to local leaders in public safety during a special meeting held over the weekend.
Members of the Patriot Guard Riders gathered at Denny's restaurant in Norwich on Saturday for a recognition ceremony honoring Norwich City Police Chief Joseph Angelino, Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo and Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting for their countless efforts in helping the organization carry out its mission. The three have collectively played a major role in Patriot Guard functions over the years and according to Alex “Lex” Danyluk, Ride Captain for NY Patriot Guard Riders regions two and five, they are more than worthy of the spotlight.
“Whenever we do a ride, a memorial ride or any military type ride, they have been there to help us out,” Danyluk said. Whether blocking off traffic, hanging a flag to ride under, or providing police escort for memorials and funeral processions, the Sheriff's Office, Norwich Police and Norwich Fire Department have been there to help, he added. “It's a proud moment – to ride with 100-150 people underneath an American flag. It really is an honor for us.”
Custom made plaques were presented to Angelino, Cutting and Chawgo in appreciation for their service, as well as those who work in their respective departments. “It's just a small token of our appreciation,” said Danyluk. “It's hard for us to say just how much their work means. They might get paid to do it; but for us, it means so much more.”
“We don't get a lot of recognition like this,” Angelino commented, also commending the Patriot Guard for their service. “I thank you for all you do,” he told those in attendance. “It's probably one of the most important things you do, to honor the troops when they come back.”
Cutting added, “I can not thank you all enough for what you do. It's important that you continue to provide your support, and we are always here to support you in return.”
The Patriot Guard Riders is a volunteer, registered nonprofit organization which ensures dignity and respect at memorial services that honor fallen veterans, honorably discharged veterans and first responders. Besides motorcycles, the organization shares a common interest to pay respects to service men and women and first responders, including law enforcement officers, firefighters and EMTs. The group is currently 6,300 members strong in New York, and more than 300,000 nationwide.
Riders attend several funeral services every year, each on an invitation only basis. Danyluk said the objective is to show respect for the fallen heroes, their families and their communities, and shield mourning family and friends from interruptions that may be created by protestors. The organization carries a vision to accomplish the latter strictly through legal, non-violent means.
In May, the Patriot Guard Riders will also participate in the second annual Central New York “Our Community Salutes” recognition ceremony, which recognizes high school graduates who choose to enlist in the U.S. Army, National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard.
