Norwich 58, Dryden 29
NORWICH – Norwich moved a step closer to reaching its third Section IV final in four seasons.
Jennifer Borfitz scored 18 points for the Purple Tornado (12-6) Wednesday night, who host Waverly in the Class B semifinals Saturday.
Norwich led by just four at the first turn, but started the second stanza on a 12-3 run to move the lead into double digits. Borfitz had seven points during the spurt, and the Tornado defense swarmed in the halfcourt rarely allowing the Purple Lions good looks at the basket. "As soon as we did a little bit better job defending their high-low play, we did a great job of defending (as a team)," said Norwich coach Josh Bennett.
Norwich struggled to make open shots until the third quarter when it scored the first 16 points to open a 45-14 margin. Borfitz hit a spot-up three at the end of the run, and junior Carin Kuhn scored seven of her nine points in the quarter, the last three on a trey from the top of the key.
"I thought we played well on offense in the first half, we just didn't make many shots," Bennett said. "We finally made a couple of jumpshots in the third quarter, and got on a run."
