Greene committees plan joint fundraiser
Just in time for Easter, the Joint Recreation and Greene Playground Committees are co-sponsoring a Ham and Turkey Raffle on March 29 at 7 p.m. at the Genegantslet Golf Club.
The Ham and Turkey raffle will help both committees reach their goals for the children of Greene and surrounding areas.
The two committees have worked hand-in-hand in preparation for the event with the goal of increased public support. The collaborative will split the proceeds from the day's fundraising venture and apply the monies raised after expenses to their respective funds which will be utilized directly towards area youth in one way or another.
Specifically, the Joint Recreation Committee (JRC) provides a six week summer program which includes programming by way of swimming lessons administered by certified instructors and life guards, arts and crafts activities, recreational games and bus transportation. This program is under the direction of well qualified individuals and a very enthusiastic group of youth counselors who are all local students.
Not only does the JRC-funded program serve to benefit the enrolled children; it also offers leadership opportunities as well as a part-time job to the high school aged staff during the summer months.
In addition to the summer program, the JRC also provides the youth springtime softball and T-ball programs and a soccer program in the fall, as well as providing the necessary insurance coverage for the summertime track & field and wintertime basketball activities.
The JRC provides all of these programs at no cost for approximately 300 children and families in the Greene area community each year.
Working in tandem with the JRC for this event, the Greene Community Playground Committee was founded in the fall of 2013 by a group of residents that are interested in fundraising to provide the children with playground equipment at the Greene Ball Flats. To date they have raised approximately $15,000 and have secured from Raymond Foundation a matching grant of up to $30,000, the goal is $70,000.
Currently, the playground equipment vendor has been selected and the design is being studied. The committee is in the planning stages of coordinating a “community build” of the playground in the fall of 2014 or spring of 2015 depending on the strength of donations and fundraising efforts throughout 2014.
The public is urged that it's never too late to donate for either of the causes, and is assured by the committees that every gift will be acknowledged publicly.
In order to enable contributions to be charitable, tax-exempt gifts, the Greene Labor Day Picnic Association, Inc. has agreed to serve as fiscal manager and sponsor of this initiative.
Checks should be directed to the Greene Labor Day Picnic Association, Inc. but the memo line should indicate Playground Fund and mailed to Jan Strain and Marcia Miller, 83 South Chenango St., Greene, NY 13778.
Admission 11 years of age and up $5, children 5-10 $3 Admission will cover chili, hot dog, and refreshments. Doors open at 6pm, tables cannot be reserved. All proceeds will go to JRC and the Playground Committees.
