New geriatrics practice expands local primary care access
NORWICH – In an effort to keep up with the waxing number of senior citizens in Chenango County, UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital has once again expanded the services offered to the demographic by introducing another highly qualified clinician to its staff of geriatric and primary care providers.
The hospital recently announced that Mushtaq Sheikh, MD, FACP, has joined UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital and is leading a new geriatrics practice now located at 4 Newton Ave. in downtown Norwich.
Chris Kisacky, Vice President Operations at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital said, “Chenango County is experiencing rapid growth in the senior sector. Seniors often have a complex set of health concerns that geriatricians are uniquely trained to understand and handle.”
With that in mind, Kisacky continued. “UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital has expanded our primary care offerings by implementing a geriatrics practice. We are excited to announce that Dr. Sheikh, who is board certified in geriatrics and internal medicine, and is very experienced in serving geriatric patients, has joined us to implement this practice. Patricia Mitchell Bowman, FNP, who has worked with geriatric patients for many years, most recently in the hospital’s nursing home, is also providing services in the geriatrics office.”
Dr. Sheikh comes to Chenango Memorial from Elmira, where he had a private internal medicine practice for 33 years. Sheikh also served as Chief of Geriatrics at the VA Medical Center in Bath, NY for four years.
Receiving his medical degree from Nishtar Medical College in Multan, Pakistan, Sheikh completed a rotating internship at Toledo Hospital in Ohio; internal medicine residencies at Mt. Vernon Hospital in N.Y.; St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis, Ind.; and a pulmonary fellowship at VA Medical Center/New Jersey School of Medicine and Dentistry, East Orange, N.J.
The newest addition to the Norwich practice has held many leadership roles and been recognized for quality care and for providing earthquake relief in 2005. Dr. Sheikh served as Medical Director of Elcor Health Services in Horseheads, N.Y. for 14 years and proudly received the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Economic Opportunity Program and Corning Glass in 2008, for which he was recognized by the N.Y. State Senate and U.S. Congress.
Dr. Sheikh has a long-standing interest in geriatrics. When asked why he decided to accept this position with Chenango Memorial, he stated, “It is exciting to begin a new program here, where there is a documented need to bring the latest knowledge to such a significant, important part of the community.”
