Murray places second at state meet
ITHACA - Matt Murray just missed a repeat.
The senior for Norwich, a state champion in the 600 meters last season, placed second at the Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend at Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University.
Much like last year, Murray hung back through the first half of the race before making his move from near the back of the pack. The jockeying for position kept Murray from surging to the front, and he finished second with a time of 1:21.55. "A runner on the inside of the track veered out cutting off Matt, and that allowed Luke Germanakos to take the finish line first," said Norwich coach Shaun Horan.
Before the meet, Murray was selected by Section IV as its sportsmanship award winner, and he added Section IV MVP honors for his performances this season. Both awards were voted on by Section IV's coaches, Horan said.
Norwich senior Brooke Bonney also competed in the state meet placing 19th in the shot put with a toss of 36 feet, 8 inches. Horan said it was the most competitive shot put competition in several years with the top 10 finishers all tossing over 40 feet.
