NORWICH – Alleged murderer Ganesh R. Ramsaran, 38, appeared in Chenango County Court on Monday on a motion to withdraw his defense counsel.

Ramsaran stood before Chenango County Court Judge Frank B. Revoir Jr. with James Chamberlain, one of his attorneys. Ramsaran’s privately retained attorney, F. Stanton Ackerman of Albany, was not present.

In an affidavit filed with the court, Ackerman outlined that retainer fees for counsel included fees for experts that may be needed to investigate the case. It was stated in Ackerman’s affidavit that Ramsaran’s father, Sam Ramsaran, said he would secure funds to pay the attorneys and the additional expert fees. In late January, Sam Ramsaran informed Ackerman that “his loan expectations were ‘in trouble” and there was no guarantee the loan would be received. Ackerman wrote that the defendant is financially unable to pay for defense, expert fees or other additional expenses.

Ackerman additionally noted a lack of cooperation between the attorneys and Ramsaran. No specifics were mentioned, but Ackerman stated “it is absolutely impossible to properly defend the accused.”

Per the affidavit, Ramsaran owes more than $72,000 to the attorneys, and that does not include any further bills that may come from experts.

In court, the prosecution said they had no position regarding the motion.

“I haven’t seen him (Ackerman) since October,” said Ramsaran when he addressed the court. “I’d like to see him gone.”
