S-E names familiar face superintendent

SHERBURNE – In anticipation of the retirement of Sherburne-Earlville Superintendent Gayle Hellert, the S-E School Board on Monday officially appointed a new superintendent to bring leadership and a new vision to the school district.
With unanimous backing from S-E board members, Eric Schnabl will step into the superintendent position starting July 1. Schnabl presently serves as high school principal at the Cazenovia Central School District but has a former career with Sherburne-Earlville as a teacher and administrator.
“It's something I always kept an eye on, to come back and be part of the community again,” said Schnabl. “In a way, it's like coming home. I've had an opportunity to grow professionally and increase my knowledge in education and curriculum, and I look forward to bringing that knowledge back to the Sherburne-Earlville community.”
Schnabl got his start in education as an athletic trainer and biology teacher at the Guilderland Public High School in 1989. From there, family matters and a job opportunity brought him to Sherburne-Earlville, where he taught biology and served as chair for S-E’s science department from 1998-2002.
In the interim, Schnabl acquired his certificate in school administration through New York State University at Albany. He worked closely with administrators at the S-E middle school before being appointed high school principal in 2002 – a title he held before leaving the Sherburne-Earlville School District for Cazenovia in 2005.
Now, with total support from the school board and outgoing Superintendent Hellert (who has been with Sherburne-Earlville for 34 years, nine of which she served as superintendent), Schnabl said he's eager to step into a new position of responsibility and leadership.
“Creating a lifelong learning culture at Sherburne-Earlville has been an important part of Gayle's leadership,” stated Dr. Thomas Morris, S-E School Board President. “We feel that Eric Schnabl will not only continue to push that but also thrive along with the state mandated changes in education. We are trying to keep Sherburne-Earlville at the forefront of education, to make it a flagship. Gayle started that and I think Eric will do a good job to continue it.”
Said Schnabl, “There has been a lot of changes in the state when it comes to education, especially with the Common Core … It's exciting to be at the forefront of that. I want to continue doing what's best for the kids at S-E to keep the district moving in a positive direction in terms of student achievement.”
Schnabl will also be actively involved with the search committee for a new elementary school principal for the 2014-2015 school year. That position was made available after Principal John Douchinsky also announced he will retire at the end of the school year.
