Today marks 100-year milestone for Norwich

NORWICH – Happy anniversary to the City of Norwich.
Today, March 12, 2014, marks 100 years since the New York State legislature first recognized the Village of Norwich as a city. The designation was given after members of the state senate and assembly passed the Norwich Charter Bill, later signed by then state Governor Martin Glynn.
The law became effective immediately. The President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Norwich were renamed “Mayor” and “Aldermen” under the newly signed charter. Those positions were decided by voters for the first time in November, 1914, and elected officials took office under the new charter for the City of Norwich the following January.
Present Mayor Joseph Maiurano issued a proclamation on behalf of the city this morning in honor of the occasion.
“We can not, and should not, forget those individuals and organizations whose efforts and labor over the past 100 years resulted in the quality of life that we enjoy today,” the proclamation reads. “Norwich continues to be a beautiful, vibrant community of citizens who continue to have dreams and visions for the future.”
The document continues, “I, Joseph P. Maiurano, by virtue of the authority vested in me as the Mayor of Norwich, hereby proclaim the year 2014 as the City of Norwich Centennial Year, reminding everyone celebrating this centennial that we should honor the past, celebrate the present, and continue to imagine the future.”
The City of Norwich Centennial Committee has planned a series of events throughout the year in celebration of this significant milestone, starting with a kick-off celebration at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Northeast Classic Car Museum on Rexford Street. The event will feature guest speakers, pictures of Norwich past, and 25 cent admission into the museum for Norwich residents before and after the ceremony, during regular museum hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Special admission price into the Classic Car Museum will continue Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
