UHS Ortho hosts free joint pain program
NORWICH – On Thursday, March 20, UHS Orthopedics in Norwich is inviting the public to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital’s basement conference room for a free program on joint pain.
During the 5:30 p.m. presentation, Dr. Daniel M. Downs will discuss the causes and treatment of joint pain – both surgical and non-surgical. He will include minimally invasive surgical options as well and answer questions from attendees. Light refreshments will be provided.
The orthopedic department at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital practices general orthopedics. The most common patients include those with ailments which affect their knees, ankles, shoulders, wrists and hips.
Statistically speaking, the middle-aged to senior population represent the bulk of orthopedic joint replacement surgeries and chief complainants of joint pain. According to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2012, nearly 43 percent of U.S. Adults age 45 to 64 years of age and more than 49 percent of those aged 65 and older suffer from chronic joint pain which interrupts normal activities of daily living. With that in mind, the hospital invites seniors to attend the informative presentation.
The presentation is intended to be informative in nature. The basis for hosting the event is to get the word out to those who suffer from joint pain that there are options available depending on the specific type of pain, not all of which require extensive inpatient surgery or joint replacement. Those who attend are encouraged to speak directly with Dr. Downs about specific ailments or concerns.
Dr. Downs is a general orthopedic surgeon with a special interest in sports medicine and joint replacement as well as foot and hand care, spine and pain management, joint revisions and trauma care. His fellowship training included pediatric orthopedics and welcomes everyone who is interested in learning about joint pain and treatment to attend his presentation. Participants are invited to come prepared with questions about this subject.
Dr. Downs is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and Albany Medical College, where he completed a residency in Orthopedic Surgery. He also completed a fellowship in General Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Iowa. His fellowship training included pediatric orthopedics, Downs has practiced in New York State, Missouri and Kansas and comes to Norwich from a practice in Corinth, Mississippi.
