Diner offers reward to find vandal
NORWICH – Nearly two weeks after Bill's Diner in Norwich endured its second instance of vandalism within a month, the restaurant owner is turning to the help of the community for more information.
Bill Arvanitis, owner of the Bill's Diner located at 6082 state Highway 12, is offering a $500 reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for vandalism at his business. Arvanitis said the suspect smashed 10 of the diner's front and side windows using a hammer.
According to Arvanitis, the suspect, who was identified as wearing a hooded coat and driving a white van, was caught by the establishment’s newly installed security surveillance system. Surveillance images show the instance happened approximately 12:50 a.m. Saturday, March 1.
“We don't know who did it or why,” Arvanitis said.
Arvanitis said the diner had upgraded its security surveillance system after a similar act of vandalism occurred at the diner on Dec. 17. At that time, only four windows had been smashed and security footage captured by old surveillance cameras show the vandal used a baseball bat. However, it appears to be the same van in both instances, Arvanitis pointed out.
Following the first instance of vandalism, Arvanitis upgraded his security surveillance system, providing him with better quality images which have helped police with the investigation.
Both occasions have led Arvanitis to work closely with his attorney and his insurance company to replace broken windows on the facade of the diner. He is also continuing talks with the Chenango County Sheriff's Office to track down those responsible. To date, three of the broken double pane windows have been replaced, he said; but total cost of damage between the two instances tops $5,000 dollars, leaving a big unexpected gap in the diner's budget for the time being.
“We are making progress in the investigation,” commented Sergeant Ellingsen of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office. However, he said much of the investigation at this point is speculative. “Right now, we are working on some leads … We have narrowed down our list of suspects but it’s still very much an open investigation."
Arvanitis is asking that anyone with information call the diner at 607-334-8002 or 607-972-5327.
