Hunts, videography with Outdoor Adventure Team

SHERBURNE – Salvo Magro, President of the Outdoor Adventure Team and 2008 Sherburne-Earlville graduate, remembered his favorite hunt in detail.
“The sun was starting to set, the buck was at 36 yards, I drew my bow,” he said. “I settled my nerves and squeezed the trigger.”
The buck was a 140 inch, eight pointer that Magro killed in Ohio for the TV show “Fear No Evil,” which will air on the Outdoor Channel in October.
This kill is just one of many that Magro has orchestrated through his videography work, his time with the Outdoor Adventure Team (based in Sherburne) and the guided hunts he offers.
Magro was first inspired when his dad, Vinny Magro, took him turkey hunting. He shot his first bird when he was eight years old and remembers looking back at the camera and saying, “Dad, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.”
In high school Magro started the Outdoor Adventure Team (OAT) with fellow hunters. The team includes Magro, Wheeler Brunschmid, Trevor Bays, Nino Magro, Vinny Magro, Matt Layman, Danny Hicks and Bill Schillet.
“We take people out, youth and people who don’t know how to hunt, and show them all that mother nature has to offer,” explained Magro.
“Each youth season a member of the Outdoor Adventure Team takes out kids 12-15 years of age on a Turkey hunt,” said Brunschmid. “Our hunting experiences together have given us the desire to show as many individuals as possible the spirit of nature and hunting. Our passion to document our journeys is crystalizing as each of us works with groups and organizations in the Outdoor Industry.”
The OAT has become well-known for their field production work.
Said one reviewer on OAT’s Facebook page, “Every big stud looks better in color! I hunted with last season in New York and y'all filmed two of my hunts! Definitely the best in your face hunting of my life.”
Another reviewer posted, “You and the OAT Staff do an awesome job, so I can make myself a better hunter for my boys. You guys rock!”
Magro first started working as a guide when he was at SUNY Oneonta studying TV production. He gained his NYS guide license and has been guiding ever since. These guided hunts proved to be an answer to Magro’s prayers in more ways than one. On one hunt he met Nate Hosie, who was working as a cameraman for HeadHunters TV.
He remembers saying to Hosie, “Nate, when you make it big don’t forget about me.”
Hosie kept true to this promise when he invited Magro to participate in an internship with the Headhunters’ crew in Illinois.
This opportunity led to a number of freelance opportunities for well-known outdoor shows. Some notable ones include “Steve’s Outdoor Adventures,” “HeadHunters,” “Fear No Evil,” and the award-winning “Arrow Affliction.” On these shows Magro has killed alligators, rattlesnakes, huge bucks and has traveled in over 35 states.
While this experience taught Magro a great deal, one his defining moments occurred when he was 23 years old.
“Twenty-three feet up in a tree is where I found Jesus Christ,” said Magro.
He explained that he had always wanted to be in the outdoor industry since he was a child, but while up in the tree realized that he was finally living his dream. Magro hopes to eventually have his own TV show on the Outdoor Channel or his own production company.
Brunschmid also has some great opportunities coming up. This summer he will document all of the backpacking and sea kayaking adventures in Denali State Forest, as well as document a promotional video for the Great Alaska Council Ultimate High Adventure Program.
