Flowers abound for Mother's Day at Mountain View Gardens
SHERBURNE – Mother's Day is fast approaching and Mountain View Gardens of Sherburne has been very busy in preparation. When driving up, one sees the various greenhouses bursting with color and plants of various sizes, species and uses.
“Travel to Sherburne for the absolute best plants,” said one reviewer on the Mountain View Facebook page.
“I have just about everything,” said owner Tammy Sawyer-Simpson. “From annuals, perennials and bedding plants to specialized hanging plants.”
Sawyer-Simpson also has herbs and vegetables available for sale and offers gift certificates.
“My specialty baskets are my best sellers,” said Sawyer-Simpson. She plants all of the designer and hanging baskets and explained that there is a planning process in order to make sure the baskets are as beautiful as possibvle when they are in full bloom. Many of her hanging baskets are unique in that they are cone shaped.
“Some are weaved in moss and vines. Others are weaved with banana leaf and maize,” said Sawyer-Simpson.
Another reviewer wrote, “This place will make you smile with all the beautiful flowers and her cute decorations.”
This is the sixth year since Sawyer-Simpson opened the business. She explained she was inspired to open Mountain View after experimenting with her own hobbyist greenhouse.
“I used to spend too much money on plants,” said Sawyer-Simpson with a smile. “The hobbyist greenhouse turned out amazing.”
Since Mountain View was established, there has been a greenhouse added every year. The planting process is a huge family affair, explained Sawyer-Simpson.
Her sister's family comes for a weekend in March and joins Sawyer-Simpson and her family to fill all of the pots with dirt.
“We fill the pots the whole weekend,” said Sawyer-Simpson. “Thousands and thousands are filled with dirt before the plants come in.”
Approximately 60 percent of her seedlings for her hanging baskets come from Proven Winners, a well-known and respected company in the gardening business. Sawyer-Simpson plants the seedlings as soon as they arrive the following week.
“I'd much rather have a higher quality plant, even though my initial cost is higher,” said Sawyer-Simpson. “Proven Winners is a well respected grower.”
When asked if she has assistance with planting in March as well, Sawyer-Simpson said, “No, I plant everything. All of the hanging baskets and four inch plants are planted in March.”
Sawyer-Simpson has also begun to plant her vegetables, which are currently available for sale. Every five days she fills numerous trays to germinate a few thousand seedlings. Two to three weeks after the seeds are planted, the seedlings are ready to be transplanted.
Mountain View Gardens is open from April 15 until July. While her season ends in the late summer, Sawyer-Simpson explained that the work does not end. Every winter, the greenhouses and water lines have to be cleaned and sanitized.
For now, Sawyer-Simpson is focused on making the Mother's Day sales period a success. She explained that rather than celebrating, she and her family will be at Mountain View assisting customers.
“We'll be here. That's my Mother's Day present,” said Sawyer-Simpson. “My family is so supportive. I couldn't do it without them.”
Mountain View Gardens is located at 139 Mountain View Drive in Sherburne and is open from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tues-Sun. Call 674-4769 for more information.
