Parade Committee makes final preparations

NORWICH – The Norwich Centennial Parade Committee has taken strides along side local merchants and business owners to bring the city of Norwich community together in an effort to orchestrate an event to remember for another one hundred years. The parade will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 23.
Topping off the event, Norwich Pharmaceuticals has graciously sponsored a fireworks display, which will take to the skies following an evening of entertainment in both East and West Parks. Performing at the celebration, Kaitlyn Jackson of American Idol fame, Leslie Passco and Mike O’Connor and the United Brass Ensemble are among those booked for the stage.
At last count, Mike McCormack of the Centennial Parade Committee indicates that the parade has over 40 participating groups of bands, floats and more are committed.
McCormack, who also is the Chair and Parade Coordinator for the Evening Sun's annual Holiday Parade of Lights for the last four years, says that historically many participants sign up in the last few days.
According to McCormack, the goal of the Norwich Centennial Parade Committee was to have as many of the key business that had their roots start here in our community represented in the parade or in the activities.
Key players like, NBT Bank, Norwich Pharmaceuticals, Maydole Hammer Company, Chenango Memorial Hospital and others are already involved, and the Merchants Association is working in tandem with The Evening Sun to represent all the downtown merchants.
If you are interested contact Anna McLaughlin or Matt White of The Evening Sun.
McCormack said, “I'm hoping for a few more key players that have had their roots planted in the community for even more than 100 years to make their final decisions, they will be missed if they are not represented.”
The BID and Norwich Centennial Committee have been advertising and encouraging businesses, city offices and homes in the town along the route of the parade (Broad Street – From Division Street to Fair Street) to decorate their windows with Patriotic Bunting. You can see ads in the Pennysaver on how to secure this bunting.
“All in all, even if we do not get one more participant, the parade is going to be a success,” said McCormack, “and great tribute to the city’s 100th anniversary.”
