Canasawacta Country Club expands offerings

NORWICH – The Canasawacta Country Club in Norwich has expanded its offerings to be more inclusive and inviting to its female members.
“It was Karen Mortensen, long time member of Canasawacta, who inspired me to put in silver tees for the senior women here,” explained owner Tim Carson. “The men had gold tees that they used if they were over 70, why can't the women?”
As a result, the club has expanded to include these tees for women and made alterations to the course in order to make it more friendly for female golfers of all ages.
Every Monday morning the club hosts a group so women members can congregate, drink coffee and pair up for golfing.
“It's nice to see... happy customers for sure,” said Carson.
Kassie Golden, Banquet Manager, also reached out to the female members. “We asked if there was anything we can do to the menu and anything else to the club house to be more welcoming,” she said. “I think we've incorporated those suggestions.”
Carson has been with the club for 30 years and explained that the men always have a big, four day tournament and the women a one day event.
“We've always though that's what they (women members) wanted,” he explained.
Yet, desires have changed and Carson is determined to meet the needs of his female members. Consequently, he has expanded the women's tournament to be a two day event.
The women's tournament is scheduled for August 22-23, with the men's tournament on July 31 through August 2.
“They would like something a little more involved,” said Carson. “There will be live music Friday and a wine and cheese party,”
In general the tournaments involve golf, entertainment and a dinner. Members are invited to bring one guest to the tournament.
“The women are very excited that they have more opportunities to play with different women,” continued Carson. “They're looking to get the word out.”
As another fun addition, the club is offering free lessons and advice to members from a professional golfer. Marian Blain will be available for lessons on Monday, May 19 and Tuesday, May 20. Male members are invited to come from 3:30 until 5 p.m. and women are invited from 5:30 until 7 p.m, both evenings.
The club is semi-private, which means that the public is invited to join. Those interested in becoming members do not require a letter of invitation. Any non-members interested in coming for a day can also purchase a day pass.
“The more people that play, the more fun it is for everybody,” said Carson.
The Canasawacta Country Club has a wide variety of offerings besides golf. Dining is available to the public and the facilities can be used for a variety of events.
“We're a full service catering, on site venue,” said Golden. “From baby showers to weddings... to (other) big events.”
Beyond the golf course and restaurant, there are two event locations – the ballroom and pavilion. The ballroom serves as a great indoor location with outdoor access, while the pavilion is an outdoor event site that can accommodate various weather conditions.
“(The pavilion) is so affordable. It can accommodate up to 1,000 people,” explained Golden. Previous guests have used the pavilion for picnics, clam bakes and for large events like weddings.
“Our golf course, restaurant, and banquet facilities are open to the public. Membership entitles you to playing privileges for the season. There are no other mandatory fees or dues required,” states the website.
