FURY Homerun Blast for Hunger fosters athleticism, charity

NORWICH – The second annual FURY Homerun Blast for Hunger was held over the weekend, and 12 teams from across the state as well as one team from Pennsylvania participated in the softball tournament, which doubled in size since it’s inception last year.
FURY is the Norwich area travel softball team, and the tournament’s host team.
According to tournament director and head coach Rick Condon, the tournament is named so as to encourage and challenge each of the participating teams to bring non-perishable food items that are equal or greater to the number of players on each team. All the donations are then given to Roots and Wings.
“We collected two vehicle loads of items for the cause,” said Condon. “Every team that entered stepped up to the challenge and made this year’s tournament better than last years – which to me is a great success.”
Participating teams traveled from areas including Albany, Syracuse, Utica, Binghamton, and Horseheads.
According to Condon, Charlie Wheeler – assignor for the Binghamton Umpires Association – said it was a great event, one that his officials would like to be assigned again next year.
The tournament winners were the Adirondack Shock from South Glens Falls.
Although FURY did not take home the title of tournament winners, they did beat the CNY Monsters from Syracuse on Sunday – single elimination day – with a score of 8-5 after seven lead changes.
Kylie Roys racked up two RBIs on two hits for FURY. She singled in the first and sixth innings.
FURY jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Gabby Mirabito singled to ignite FURY’s offense. A single by Jackie Smith then moved Mirabito from first to third.
The CNY Monsters quickly matched FURY’s drive. In the second inning, the Monsters scored four runs. The Monsters scored on an error, and RBI single by Everett, two-run single by Waloven.
In the fourth inning, the CNY Monsters scored on another RBI single by Everett.
FURY didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring four runs in the sixth inning. They scored on two singles and an RBI triple by Syndey Bennett.
“These young ladies showed grit, heart, determination, and drive,” said FURY’s coach Rick Condon following the game. “And that’s what wins games.”
Said Condon, “This could grow to be another huge event for the local economy such as Gus Macker and Colorscape as the teams stay here, eat here, and shop here.”
