Utica man arrested for possession; officer injured in ensuing scuffle
NORWICH – A 27-year-old Utica man is being held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility awaiting his felony hearing tomorrow after police said he fought and injured the arresting Norwich Police officer while making an arrest Tuesday afternoon.
At approximately 4:25 p.m. a Norwich Police officer conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle on Miller Street near Auburn Street.
During the course of the traffic stop, the officer encountered a male passenger, and per a release from the Norwich Police Department, was said to be in possession of “several pieces of crack cocaine.”
According to authorities, in the process of making the arrest, the subject fought with the arresting officer and the back-up officer who arrived to assist.
“One officer was treated for injuries at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital and released,” said Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino.
Once the man was in custody at the NPD, and during processing, it was found that the man was released from New York State prison on parolee status.
Arrested was Conroy F. Robinson, who was released from prison on Feb. 14, 2014. He was paroled after serving approximately a year and a half of his two-year sentence for a criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree charge.
Robinson was charged on Tuesday with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, a class B felony; assault in the second degree – for intent to cause physical injury to a police officer –, a class D felony; tampering with physical evidence, a class E felony; and resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor.
Robinson was arraigned Tuesday night, but no bail was set by the court. He will remain at the CCCF until his appearance tomorrow where bail may be determined by the court.
“Making good narcotics arrests is what the community expects of its police officers,” said Angelino. “But I don’t expect the officers to be assaulted by someone who was let out of prison early because they are deemed not dangerous.”
