Norwich City Band hits the stage for summer season

NORWICH – Continuing a tradition that’s more than 110 years strong, the Norwich City Band will take to the performance stage in East Park on Friday to play a repertoire of melodies sure to delight music lovers young and old.
With another summer season underway, the Norwich City Band is tuning its instruments for a series of free performances starting at 7 p.m. in East Park in downtown Norwich. The band’s free concert series will continue at the same time each week, filling the park with a variety of instrumental music until its final performance on Aug. 15.
Featuring a number of scores that range from contemporary show tunes and popular ballads, to classical marches and patriotic hymns, the Norwich City Band plays something to please every ear, said Norwich City Band Board of Directors member Chris Robb.
“The Norwich City Band is delighted to start the 2014 season. This is something we all look forward to each year,” Robb said. “We’re all excited to be able to provide musical entertainment in what has been a (longtime) favorite community event.”
Led by conductor Gary Solomon and overseen by a board of directors established after the departure of former band manager Lee Wilhelm in 2013, the 50-plus musicians that make up the Norwich City Band typically see a large turnout, Robb added. Approximately 12-14 songs are played back to back, including favorites such as “The Entertainer,” “Oklahoma,” and “YMCA,” to name a few. And as always, each concert will end on a high note with a rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner.”
The Norwich City Band shares a diverse group of musicians, from high school students who are on summer vacation, to the seasoned musicians who remain active in the community through their love of music and has done so since its incorporation in 1903.
Free performances of the Norwich City Band are made possible with grant funding from the RC Smith Foundation and the Greater Norwich Foundation.
The Norwich City Band is always looking for new talent to join its current members on stage. Anyone interested in joining the band can call Robb at 607-244-9399.
