Fire and other accidents over the weekend

CHENANGO COUNTY – There were a number of accidents that occurred over the weekend, though there were few injuries and none were reported as serious.
Not long after 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, a 911 call reported a fire on County Road 33 in Norwich. A shed containing a wood pile was on fire and was connected to the house. The Norwich, South New Berlin, Oxford, and North Norwich fire departments responded to the scene, as well as an ambulance from Sherburne.
“The crew on Engine 4 made a quick knock-down of the fire on the back side of the house and kept the fire from entering the main part of the home,” states the Chenango County Fire Alerts Facebook page. “Additional crews then started to extinguish the fire in the shed.”
They were able to quell the fire and keep it to one room of the house.
“Two excavators were used to knock the wood apart to speed up the overhaul process,” the page continued. “County Road 33 was shut down while crews were on scene. A great job by all departments involved.”
While there was smoke damage throughout the structure, no injuries were sustained. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Chenango County Bureau of Fire.

There was a separate incident on Saturday on State Highway 12, near Tracy Road in North Norwich. Just after 6 a.m., a 911 call reported an accident involving a truck that had been pulling a trailer.
“The trailer portion became dislodged from the main vehicle and the trailer and vehicle on it crashed,” said A. Jones, Chief Dispatcher for the Chenango County Sheriff's Office.
The vehicle that contained the driver went off the side of the road and reportedly hit a pole. The vehicle that had been on the trailer rolled over on to the side of the road. No other parties were involved in the accident.“There were no injuries,” Jones said. “At another time of day it could have been serious.”
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident and was not available for comment at press time.
