Norwich Theatre Company closing in on fall show

NORWICH – Members of The Norwich Theatre Company are busy setting the stage for another exciting and memorable performance to be held right here in the heart of Chenango.
For their fifth stage production, the ensemble of local performing arts enthusiasts has been busy for the past six weeks building sets and rehearsing their parts for their rendition of “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat.”
“It's a fun, family-friendly and light hearted musical ... It's big and bright and extremely entertaining,” said Norwich Theatre Company President Marty Kuhn over the voices of female singers reciting warm-up scales in harmony Tuesday evening.
According to Kuhn, this production has a musical score that will keep watchers entertained by traveling a winding road through the genres of county, rock and roll, vaudeville and others.
“If you listen to some musicals, the majority of them tend to follow one musical genre throughout,” she explained. “For instance, ‘Oklahoma!’ is primarily country-western whereas ‘Joesph’ offers a variety. There's some kind of music for everybody.”
The storyline can be best summed up as a pop version of the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors taken directly from the book of Genesis.
Joseph, one of 12 boys, is favored by his father Jacob who awards his son by gifting him a splendid multi-colored coat. The coat, along with Joseph’s talk being the ruler of his brothers, cultivates jealousy among the other 11 siblings.
“Even the sad parts of the story are upbeat and possess a comic element,” added Kuhn.
As an act of retribution, Joseph’s brothers plan to kill him, but the plan is foiled and the brothers end up selling him into slavery far off in Egypt. Eventually, Joseph’s siblings suffer amidst famine and seek his help, and Joseph forgives.
Established in 2010, Norwich Theatre Company consists of a core groups of approximately 35 thespians from all reaches of the county.
“We have a very dedicated group of stage actors who dedicate four days per week for rehearsal, and they've worked very hard on this production. It's going to be great,” Kuhn said.
The “Joseph” cast of 24 plan on running the show for three days next weekend, Friday through Sunday. Friday and Saturdays showings have a curtain time of 7 p.m. ,and Sunday features a matinee beginning at 2 p.m.
Advance show tickets are available for $12 at Service Pharmacies in Norwich and New Berlin, Hummels Office Products in Norwich, and through the norwichtheatercompany.org, or by calling 1-888-613-4496.
Tickets are also available at the box office of the Martin W. Kappel Theatre located within the Chenango Arts Council at 27 W. Main St. for $14.
“To me it's just a fun, upbeat show that is great for the whole family, ” Kuhn added.
