Bonney scores ECAC Division III Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors
GENEVA – Eastern College Athletic Conference Commissioner Dr. Kevin T. McGinniss announced today that Hobart College basketball All-American Richie Bonney (Norwich/Norwich, N.Y.) ’14 is the 2013-14 ECAC Division III Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Bonney's achievements will be celebrated at the annual ECAC Honors Dinner on Sunday, Sept. 28 at the Sea Crest Hotel in North Falmouth, Massachusetts.
The ECAC Scholar-Athlete Awards honor the outstanding academic and athletic achievements of student-athletes representing ECAC schools in Division I, II and III. One male and one female athlete from each division are selected based on extraordinary achievements in academics, athletics, and community service.
Bonney graduated summa cum laude from Hobart in May with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and public policy studies. He is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society as well as Hobart's Druid, Chimera, and Orange Key honor societies. Bonney received the 2014 Durfee Award as the College's most outstanding senior and the 2014 Sutherland Prize in Philosophy for excellence in the classics.
On the basketball court, Bonney broke the Hobart career records for scoring (1,738 points), field goals made (680), field goal percentage (.583), and games played (114). The only Statesman to play on four consecutive 20-win teams, he led Hobart to a four-year record of 87-27 (.763) that included four straight Liberty League regular season titles, three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, back-to-back Liberty League tournament championships, and the 2011 ECAC Upstate Tournament title.
As a senior, Bonney averaged 20.4 points and a league-leading 11.0 rebounds per game. Ranked second in the nation in double-doubles (21) and field goals made (234), he was named Jostens Trophy winner as the national player of the year, and garnered All-America recognition from the NABC, D3hoops.com, Basketball Times, and DIII News. The Liberty League Player of the Year capped his career in the NABC Reese's Senior All-Star Game, leading the West to a 104-101 victory with 15 points.
Bonney's excellence in the classroom and on the court merited the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-America of the Year award for Division III basketball. He also earned Capital One Academic All-America first team recognition in each of the past two seasons, as well as three straight appearances on the Liberty League All-Academic Team and the 2013-14 Liberty League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
In the community, Bonney served as a pre-orientation leader for groups of incoming first-year students during the summers of 2012 and 2013, while also volunteering at Habitat for Humanity build sites. He helped with team basketball clinics in a local elementary school and assisted with the annual on-campus basketball clinic for Ontario ARC. Bonney volunteered with the 2014 on-campus Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event that raised awareness about sexual assault. He was presented with the 2013-14 President's Civic Leadership Award and the 2012-13 Larry Quijije Award (presented to Hobart junior for selfless dedication to community service).
