Feds confiscate computer, records from Senator Libous’ home
ALBANY – The Binghamton residence of State Senator Tom Libous and his wife, Frances, was raided by several FBI agents who confiscated records and a computer belonging to Frances Libous last Friday, according to media sources in Albany.
The Times Union reported on Tuesday that items seized are part of a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the state Attorney General’s Office. Frances Libous is the vice chairperson for the Workers Compensation Board and is currently serving a term that expires in 2017.
The FBI and Attorney General’s Office declined comment, the report says.
In July, Senator Libous was indicted on charges of making false statements to the FBI during an investigation into corruption that took place in 2010. According to his indictment, Libous lied to the FBI about using his political influence to get his son a high-paying job at a law firm in Westchester County.
Libous has denied any cover up since the allegations were made public. Facing reelection in November, he said during an event hosted by the Chenango County Republican Committee in July that he plans to continue his campaign.
“I’m proud of our 26-year record,” Libous said. “Nothing has changed. As far as I’m concerned, I’m the same person I was two months ago. This (election) is about what I have done and what I can continue to do for the community.”
A pre-trial hearing for Libous is scheduled for Sept. 3 at the federal courthouse in White Plains.
