Cyclones sweep home opener
NORWICH – The Norwich Cyclones opened their 45th season of Pop Warner football at Alumni Field Sunday with a sweep of Holland Patent.
The “C” team downed the Knights 19-6 before the home crowd. Griffin Mills had TD runs of one and 40 yards, respectively. The first Norwich score was set up by Torin Lawrence on runs of 20 and eight yards to the one yard line.
Dylan Bresee scored on a 31-yard scamper in the second, with Blaine Orlando adding the point-after touchdown. Mills, Timothy Duke, Damien Kane, Mallachi Gaters, Kyle Pounds and Orlando led the Cyclone defense.
The Cyclone “B” team prevailed 40-19 over the Knights.
Elijah Rodriguez led Cyclones scoring with three TDs in the first half on runs of three, four, and six yards, and Rodriguez kicked a 2-point P.A.T. Elijah rushed for 101 yards on nine carries for the day. Michael Squires added to the Cyclones lead on a two-yard TD.
Ayden John-Lorimer reached paydirt on a 25-yard pass from Carson Maynard for a 32-12 halftime lead.
The Cyclones scored a safety in the third, with Houston Edwards scoring his first Cyclones TD in the fourth on a one-yard plunge to end Cyclone scoring.
Michael Squires, Andrew Mullen and Cameron Byrne picked up big real estate running the ball for the Cyclones.
On defense, Ben McGillicuddy, Lorimer, Tyler Rice, Squires, Nick Glanville, Rodriguez, Jonathan Matlack-Grey, and Andrew Donahue played big “D,” along with Mullen picking up a key interception.
The Cyclones “D” team prevailed in a controlled scrimmage with the Knights.
The Cyclones are at home Sept. 7 with games at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. against visiting Rome.
