Norwich golf preview

NORWICH – Despite having a starting lineup devoid of a senior or junior, this year's Norwich golf team portends of current and future excellence.
"We have young guys, but many of them are already very experienced," said Norwich first-year coach Dave Branham, who steps in for older brother Bob Branham. Bob Branham retired from coaching this past spring after 20-plus years as head coach of the Tornado. "We're excited about this group, and we'll have all of them for the next three seasons."
Leading the way in experience is fourth-year starter Ryan Johnson. Johnson became the first Norwich freshman to qualify for the Section IV state team joining his brother Corey to make up two-ninths of the section's all-star team.
Corey Johnson and Casey Marson graduated, but three other returnees bring back experience.
Sophomore Joe Mioduszewski enters his third year as a starter, sophomore Nate Scheer is back for a second season, as is eighth-grader Alex Gage. Johnson has nailed down the top spot, but the two through four spots could be shuffled throughout the year.
Qualifying for the fifth and sixth spots in the early season are seventh-grader Kai Scheer and freshman Connor Nial. Sophomore Wes Mills has also shown marked improvement over last year, and is in position to see some starting time at the number five or six spot as well.
"These guys hit balls well, now it’s about teaching these young brains how to play golf," Branham said. "As they grow in confidence and maturity, in a couple of years, this will be an outstanding group."
With three matches already under their belts prior to the printing of this article, Norwich has already qualified for the Class B team sectionals meeting the minimum cutoff score last Thursday at Chenango Forks. The next step is getting as many kids to qualify for the individual medalist tournament.
Ryan Johnson appears to be a lock for the spring event, and Branham hopes others on the squad will join Johnson. "I'd like to see three individuals at the medalist tournament, if not four," Branham said.
