Opening statements in Ramsaran trial expected today
NORWICH – A jury of nine men and three women was selected for the murder trial of Ganesh R. Ramsaran at the close of court Wednesday.
Gilberto Garcia, defense attorney for Ramsaran, said that up to four alternate jurors will be added Thursday morning prior to opening statements.
One hundred Chenango County residents that have been deemed eligible to be called for jury duty are expected to arrive at the Chenango County Courthouse at 9:30 a.m. In the previous two days of jury selection, 100 residents were called, although fewer than that appeared in court each day.
After preliminary eliminations due to conflicts with either the judge, district attorney, defense attorney, defendant, or any possible witnesses were completed, just over two dozen potential jurors remained.
Prospective jurors were then asked questions by Chenango County Court Judge Frank B. Revoir Jr., District Attorney Joseph McBride, the defendant’s counsel, Garcia.
Following two rounds of questioning different residents, five jurors were added Wednesday and sworn in.
Throughout both days of jury selection, Ramsaran diligently took notes and was communicative with his lawyer. Each time the lawyers approached the bench, Ramsaran was right there, attentive to what was taking place.
Twelve jurors are now prepared to serve as the finders of facts in the case where it is alleged Ramsaran killed his wife Jennifer in their home in December of 2012. Ramsaran could be facing more than two decades in prison if found guilty.
Ramsaran has already spent more than one year in the Chenango County Correctional Facility awaiting this trial.
McBride again told the prospective jurors that the case is about deception, money, divorce, and sex. Garcia reminded the group that Ramsaran remains an innocent man unless proven otherwise beyond a reasonable doubt.
If the alternates are chosen in a timely fashion, opening statements will tentatively be made at 1:30 p.m. today.
Judge Revoir instructed the jurors that the proceedings may last until Oct. 3.
