Norwich hosts 20th annual Colorscape Chenango arts festival this weekend
NORWICH – One of Chenango County's crown jewels, The Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival is preparing for what organizers are anticipating will be the biggest and most appealing incarnation of the festival's 20-year history.
While Chenango County has been home to several summertime festivals, fairs, and activities over the years, Colorscape has proven to be the most anticipated. Drawing on a rich 19 years of history, Colorscape 2014 promises to bring even more elements of entertainment, culture and vendors that the community has grown to love over the years.
“This is the biggest and best festival we've ever put together,” said Colorscape Chenango Executive Director Peggy Finnegan, who noted an expansion for this year’s event made possible by the generous relocation of the Bullthistle Farmers market to the municipal parking lot near the Elks Lodge. “We were able to place about a dozen or so more artists booths in plots typically reserved for the Farmers' Market Saturday vendors, and BID Director Ann Coe was very generous in accommodating the Festival this year. We're very grateful, it helps tremendously.”
That extra space accounts for an increase in artists for the event, coming in at an impressive 119 unique and original displays, Finnegan said
A host of interactive activities are scheduled through the duration of the weekend-long event. The West Park Interactive Stage will play host to the action with various hands-on offerings the likes of performances by The Phoenix Project dance troupe, Argentine Tango Dancers and Blue Ribbon Cloggers.
Likewise, a songwriters' summit with main-stagers “Mustards Retreat” amongst others will give participants the opportunity to creatively engage with nationally-recognized musicians.
For the younger audience, the Colorscape Committee is proud to announce the return of the always successful “Art Zone,” which caters to children ages pre-school to age nine.
Foodies can again rejoice at the variety of culinary delectables available along West Main Street. for the event. Ranging from grilled spedies, barbecue, and vegan affair, to the sweet offings of the New York Almond Company, patrons can get one final taste of summer festival fare.
While grabbing a quick bite in the area of West Park, be sure to visit the eighth year of the Young Emerging Artists booth featuring the artwork of high school seniors Haley Benson from Unadilla Valley and Kasey Peters from Oxford Academy High. “They are juried just like everyone else, and have their art up for sale,” Finnegan said.
The relocation of the student art exhibit from the Chenango Arts Council gallery to The Artists’ Palette on the east side of S. Broad St. will give festival goers a chance to check out the newly renovated community-centered gallery and art hub that has been in the works for nearly two years.
The new art store will also host “Colorscape Cares,” an exhibit dedicated to showing off works of the area's disabled and elderly.
Colorscape Chenango will start with the first-ever Color Dash marathon style run that will begin Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in front of the NBT Operations Center on South Broad St. (terminating in the Snyder Communications parking lot on Lackawanna Ave.), and will wind down Sunday evening.
