Centennial Quilt Show planned in Norwich
NORWICH – The Norwich centennial anniversary celebration continues with another round of events that were prepared in careful consideration of the year long celebration – much like patchwork.
Next weekend, the Piecemakers Quilt Guild, in conjunction with the Norwich Centennial Committee, has sponsored an extensive quilt show that is akin to the past.
Long before the today's standard practice of immediate gratification and entertainment, hobbies like quilt making were commonplace as a means for communities to congregate and socialize, right up into the early part of the 20th century.
In those early years of life, in the what was to become the City of Norwich, most women were busy spinning, weaving and sewing in order to clothe their family – making the art of patchwork and quilting more of a creative outlet.
A throwback to that bygone era, the Centennial committee hopes to wax nostalgic once again as it offers a peek through the looking glass in honor of 100 years since the incorporation of the City.
From Saturday Sept. 26 through Sunday, Sept. 28, the community is invited to come check out an array of unique hand-crafted quilts.
“We will have over 100 hand-made quilts on display, which is really quite something,” said Norwich Centennial committee chairman Kay Zaia.
According to Zaia, a light lunch will be made available by the women of St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. during Saturday's exposition.
“Admission into the event will be at the 1914 price of 25 cents,” Zaia said.
A wide variety of these one-of-a-kind pieces of art will be displayed, some accompanied by custom fresh floral arrangements provided by local garden clubs added Zaia.
In addition to the splendor of an ages-old art form, there will be Norwich Centennial-themed door prizes and souvenirs as well.
The event will take place at the Monsignor Guy A. Festa Parish Center of St. Bart's on Silver and W. Main Streets in downtown Norwich.
