Oxford defense rises in shutout of Whitney Point
Football
Oxford 6, Whitney Point 0
WHITNEY POINT – Oxford is taking a liking to the road.
The Blackhawks won their second game on the road this season blanking Whitney Point Friday night.
Lane Barry, making his first start of the season, hit 6-foot-5 junior Kevin Davis on a 15-yard fourth-quarter scoring pass in the fourth quarter. The Barry to Davis connection weighed heavily in the final scoring drive.
On and third-and-20, Oxford extended the drive when Barry found Davis on a 35-yard first-down play. “They were still trying to cover (Kevin) one on one, so I figured we would try that play,” said Oxford coach Jeff Newton.
Oxford’s defense, and sophomore defensive back Jon Heggie, held Whitney Point out of the endzone on two late scoring threats. Heggie halted one drive with an interception in the endzone, and on the Golden Eagles’ final possession, Heggie picked off another pass.
Oxford proceeded to run out the final minutes of the clock to improve its mark to 2-1 on the season. “Our defense bent but never broke, which was awesome,” Newton said. “The defense showed good discipline throughout the game, even being down three starters. Guys stepped in and played positions they never played before.”
Bryan Simpson rushed for 80 yards to lead the Oxford offense. The Blackhawks travel to Candor Friday.

Sherburne-Earlville 56, Sauquoit Valley 6
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville avoided the post-big-win hangover blasting Sauquoit Valley Friday in its division opener.
Matt Hull rushed for three touchdowns and 108 yards, Brodie Roebuck carried 11 times for 137 yards to go with two TDS, and Cody Marango threw a pair of long TD passes to Ben Khoury.
The Marauders were limited to just a single score in the first stanza, but came alive in the second as Roebuck and Hull scored on runs, and Marango’s 42-yard TD strike to Khoury made it 28-0 at halftime.
S-E was without several starters due to a one-game suspension for violation of team rules, but showed no ill effects of those absences. “The kids really responded, and I had every kid in the game by the third quarter,” said S-E coach Mike Jasper. “We threw it well and we ran it well. I don’t have any real complaints.”

Delhi 26, Bainbridge-Guilford 21
BAINBRIDGE – Delhi literally stole a victory from the Bobcats on the Bulldogs’ final offensive play of the game Friday at Bainbridge.
Faced with a fourth-and-10 from its own 40 with 14 seconds left, Delhi quarterback Dylan Cumpston heaved a ball down the field to a circle of offensive and defensive players. B-G’s defensive back intercepted the ball, but as he made a move the other way, Delhi receiver Nate Denison ripped the ball back, and raced 25 yards for the improbable winning touchdown.
Dennison’s score came with just three seconds left in the game, and spoiled B-G’s own apparent miracle finish. “Never in my 35 years of coaching and playing have I ever experienced anything like this,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly.
Bainbridge-Guilford created its own scintillating offensive moment on the previous possession. With starting quarterback Austin Carr injured on the previous possession, Mattingly was forced to move starting running back Dylan Moffitt to quarterback.
Moffitt directed his team on a last-minute drive, and connected with Austin Capalupo on a 36-yard scoring strike with 32.5 seconds left. “Austin (Capalupo) just made an unbelievable catch,” Mattingly said.
The TD moved B-G to within 21-20. On the conversion attempt, a B-G offensive lineman was moved to fullback, and he served as the lead blocker as Moffitt, from the shotgun formation, rushed the ball in for the two-pointer and the lead.
Delhi stalled on its first three plays of its final possession before the miracle finish. “Talk about highs and lows,” Mattingly said. “That has to be one of the toughest losses I’ve ever experienced. For the fans, I guess it was awesome. But it wasn’t for us.”
Before suffering his injury, Carr threw a pair of TD passes to Capalupo and Bailey Green. Moffitt, meanwhile, rushed 25 times for 157 yards. “It was a frustrating loss, but we hurt ourselves a lot, and we need to do a better job getting the kids mentally prepared,” Mattingly said.

Walton 36, Unadilla Valley 32
NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley nearly pulled off the biggest upset of the Section IV season Friday night.
Walton executed one of its patented time-consuming drives, and Jacob Wright’s one-yard TD run with 1:45 left in the fourth gave his club its final margin.
“It was such a great game to coach, and I don’t think anybody thought we would do anything against Walton,” said UV coach Mark Segina.
Except those wearing UV uniforms.
The Storm again went to the big play to score its touchdowns, and did so with its third-string quarterback, Mason Fernette. Fernette, a fullback the first two games, was pressed into quarterback duties when starter Jared White went down with an injury.
Fernette threw three TD passes to Ryan Postma covering 20, 16, and 50 yards, and added a 46-yard TD strike to Nick Stirone. Postma’s last score came in the fourth quarter and put UV in front 32-28 midway through the stanza.
Fernette threw for 227 yards – 144 of those to Postma – but UV had negative 16 yards total yards rushing.
Walton had 381 yards on the ground on 64 carries. “We need to shore up our run defense, and we need to do much better than negative 16 rushing yards,” Segina said. “But this is a team that is scrappy and never gives up. We’re getting into these shootouts, we just need to learn how to finish.”
UV (0-3) plays Sidney on Friday.

Newark Valley 40, Greene 0
GREENE – David Crow ran for two first-quarter touchdowns as Newark Valley blanked Greene on Friday night.
Newark Valley had three backs gain at least 85 yards, and rushed for 397 yards as a team, easily the most against Greene this season. “We figured out on film that Newark Valley gained 190 yards after breaking a tackle. That’s a credit to them. They have strong, physical running backs.”
Newark Valley was forced to punt on its opening series, and a fake punt attempt was sniffed out by Greene setting the Trojans up in NV territory. After a five-yard run, Greene completed a 12-yard first-down pass, but fumbled the ball back to the Cardinals.
Newark Valley then marched for its first TD, a nine-yard Crow run.
Early in the second quarter, Greene drove to the Newark Valley 30, and had a second-and-three. A five-yard penalty, and a fumbled snap eventually led to a punt.
“We kind of lost all momentum after that series,” Gorton said.
