American Legion Auxiliary to recognize local vets with annual luncheon
NORWICH – The Chenango County American Legion Auxiliary will be sponsoring an afternoon of recognition for local veterans from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 at the American Legion, Lt. Warren E. Eaton, Post 189 in Norwich.
In addition to a free luncheon for veterans, the gala will also feature networking opportunities with local veteran services providers, possible guest lectures from local and state legislators, and a special presentation of certificates of recognition to each veteran in attendance.
“We want to give a ‘thank you’ to all the veterans in the area who have served over the years,” said Auxillary member Mary Lou McAvoy. “And we want to let veterans out there know that we are here to help them ... we have a lot of younger veterans in the area who might have a lot of questions. We want to be able to help them answer those questions.”
The Chenango County American Legion Auxiliary hosted more than 40 veterans at last year’s luncheon, McAvoy added. “People just enjoyed it so much, and a lot of people asked that we hold it again,” she said. With plans of making the event an annual occasion, she said hopes are to grow it a little more each year.
The luncheon will host veterans from all over the county, including those currently residing at the Oxford Veterans Home. What’s more, it wil include information from the Chenango County Veterans’ Administration as well as program for veterans available through beneficial organizations, including Hospice and the veterans employment office of the Chenango-Delaware-Otsego Workforce Career System.
“This is open to all veterans as a way of showing that we’re appreciative of their service. I think it’s important that we give them the recognition that they deserve.”
