Oxford Ag Fair this Friday

OXFORD – Cows, chickens, and goats – oh my!
An Oxford Academy staple of more than thirty years is due to return this upcoming Friday, Sept. 26.
Oxford Academy’s annual Agriculture Fair has been extended this year to make the even more accessible for community members to attend, running from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Much in the same vein as the annual county fair, Oxford's Ag Fair models their exhibit-style event upon highlighting not just farming, but all things agriculture related.
“The idea is to educate members of the community numerous aspects of agriculture,” said Oxford Academy Agriculture Teacher and FFA advisor Crystal Aukema, who acted in tandem with Kathy Ryan and Margo Barrows to organize this year's event.
While much of the extracurricular focus shines on high school sports, Oxford's Ag Fair is a chance for other hard-working kids to showcase talents and hard work.
“It's not just about farming,” Aukema said. “The Ag Fair represents how agriculture has changed over the years, and demonstrates the relationships between farming, agriculture, food science and technology.”
The open-to-the-public event, which will be located at the Oxford Academy high school campus on South Washington Ave., will host myriad exhibits run by the students.
Not only does Friday's event serve to convey strong messages of self-reliance that extend beyond the confines of agriculture, but it is also a chance to expose and support local businesses.
Exhibitors range from all points of the agricultural spectrum, and include the likes of Kutik’s honey and Cornell Cooperative Extension, Page Seed, and others. All will be on hand to lend valuable expertise and engage in informative feedback.
Art, animals, demonstrations and products from local businesses will likewise be on-site.
“Many of our students will be bringing in their own show animals. We'll have chickens, goats, cows and a donkey,” Aukema said. “We hope to see a good turnout as the students and staff have worked very hard on this great community event that has been around a very long time,” she said.
In typical fashion for the Ag Fair, there will be tractor as well as hay rides and a rope making demonstration. Activities will take place both outside the front of the school and inside the gymnasium.
Pulled pork and chicken barbecue will be served by Oxford caterer Tim Wakefield, who will donate a portion of the day's proceeds to the event.
