Bobcats extend dominance over UV
NEW BERLIN – Styles make matchups, and Bainbridge-Guilford imposed its will in the second half of Friday night’s game at Unadilla Valley.
Winless through four games, the Bobcats extended their decade-long dominance over the Storm picking up a 24-22 victory.
B-G forced three second-half turnovers, one a pick-six from defensive back Bailey Green, Green caught a go-ahead TD pass from Austin Carr, and durable running back Dylan Moffitt scored what would be the winning points on an 11-yard TD run.
“We had a great week of practice, and the kids transferred that to the field tonight,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly after the victory. “I think our kids played their best game of the season.”
While Mattingly lauded his team’s inspired play, UV mentor Mark Segina lamented his own club’s uneven mix of turnovers, penalties, and occasional venture into the sublime. “To be honest, I thought we came out a little lackadaisical,” Segina said.
For all intents and purposes, B-G should not have been a winless club entering week five. It had certain victory snatched away from it on the final play of the game against Delhi, and in every contest, established a solid running game.
Through two quarters against UV, that one consistent – running the ball – was held in check by the Storm defense. The Bobcats did have 109 yards rushing in the first half, but nearly half of those came on scrambles from Carr.
Still, a Moffitt five-yard TD run early in the second quarter had B-G deadlocked with the host club entering halftime.
“We talked at halftime that if we split our backs, it would open a bubble in the middle, which it did,” Mattingly said.
Instead of intermittent success with the running game, B-G launched its traditional ball-control attack, and it imposed the type of game plan it needed: Keeping the UV offense off the field.
“That’s what I was most worried about – B-G’s downhill running attack,” Segina said.
B-G had two six-minute drives in the second half, but perhaps the biggest play of the game came from the Bobcats’ defense. After giving the ball up on downs following a 6 ½-minute possession, UV elected to pass on first down from its 35.
Storm quarterback Mason Fernette looked right to his intended receiver, but B-G defensive back, Green, sniffed the play out, and stepped it front of the would-be receiver, and returned an interception 38 yards for the score and a 12-6 lead.
B-G’s defense forced another three-and-out, and that set the stage for the Bobcats’ best drive of the game. Mixing running backs Moffitt and Ben Bivar on runs to the inside and outside, B-G drove to the UV five and faced a fourth-and-goal.
Mattingly eschewed another run call, and instead caught the UV defense off guard with a quick slant pass. Carr hit Green on a five-yard TD strike and the 18-6 lead.
Unadilla Valley countered with its own TD – its first since the opening quarter – driving 57 yards in just 84 seconds. Caleb Simons’ 1-yard TD run and Mason Fernette’s two-point run drew UV to within 18-14.
Unadilla Valley kept the momentum going when it forced a B-G punt, and had the ball at the 37 with 4 ½ minutes to play. However, a bad center snap went over Fernette’s head, and in the ensuing scramble for the ball, the Bobcats’ Tyler Hart recovered. Six plays later, Moffitt’s TD dash up the middle from 11 yards out cinched up the win.
Moffitt, playing with a broken bone in his foot, rushed for a game-high 88 yards on 24 carries. “Dylan Moffitt is such a warrior, and he came out and gave it everything he had,” Mattingly said.
UV made things interesting – as it has all season – as Fernette connected with Ryan Postma on a 44-yard TD pass with 37 seconds left. Needing a successful onside kick to have a chance to win, the Storm kicked it out of bounds to end its victory hope.
“We had some key breakdowns that cost us tonight,” Segina said. “All the credit to B-G. They game-planned us well, they have a great coaching staff, and they just kicked our butts.”
Fernette had 83 yards rushing and 114 passing for UV, and Postma caught three balls for 92 yards.
