One car MVA leads to DWI charge, Route 12 shutdown
OXFORD – First responders and Chenango County Sheriff's deputies reported to the scene of a one-car rollover with entrapment Friday evening along the north bound side of State Highway 12, just south of the Village of Oxford, officials said.
According to Lt. Richard Cobb of the CCSO, Chenango dispatch received a vehicle and traffic complaint by a third party passerby of a northbound vehicle traveling erratically.
According to the report, the vehicle eventually came to a complete stop in the travel lane of the highway. The third party approached the vehicle to check the welfare status of the occupants and witnessed two individuals – one male, one female – who appeared to be “asleep” within the stopped vehicle.
According to Lt. Cobb, the passerby then attempted to wake the subjects, who became startled when roused and then fled that location in the Town of Brisben.
At that time, the passerby notified Chenango County 911 who dispatched sheriff’s deputies to that area.
The vehicle continued traveling erratically northbound for approximately another six miles when the operator veered left into the southbound lane and then overcorrected to the right at which point he lost control of the vehicle, said authorities. As it exited the roadway, the vehicle rolled over onto private property and came to rest on the east side of highway 12 near Mill Brook Rd.
Oxford Fire Chief Mike Cobb indicated that upon arrival to the scene, first responders determined that the female victim was entrapped within the vehicle and at that time responders summoned a helicopter for patient transport.
According to scanner reports, Both Mercy Flight and LifeNet declined due to unsafe flying conditions with regard to the weather.
The 22-year-old female victim was extricated from the vehicle by Oxford Rescue and transported via ambulance to UHS Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City where she was treated for non life threatening injuries.
The operator, 26-year-old Aaron Hicks of Norwich, was treated on the scene and subsequently transported to UHS Wilson memorial Hospital in Johnson City for his injuries.
“We initially thought that the young lady had sustained much more severe injuries than she had, she is very lucky,” said Chief Cobb.
Traffic was diverted to County Road 32 as the incident closed down a stretch of State Highway 12 for more than three hours while accident re-constructionists performed their investigation.
Emergency personnel from Norwich, Brisben and Greene assisted Oxford command during the incident.
Hicks was charged with DWI and is to appear before the Town of Oxford Court in the future to answer to the charges.
