Norwich solves CV, evens overall record
NORWICH – The picture is looking a lot brighter over at Norwich than it did three weeks ago.
The Purple Tornado won their third straight game, and in doing so, ended a five-year absence of wins beating Chenango Valley 42-20 Friday night in the showcase attraction on homecoming weekend.
Michael Oralls had his second straight four-touchdown game for NHS (3-3) rushing for 135 yards, and Cole Rifanburg threw for 110 yards. Rifanburg’s older brother Tristan served as a dual receiving/running threat finishing with 72 yards receiving and 57 yards rushing.
“The internal motivation this week was that we had not had a lot of recent success against Chenango Valley,” said Norwich coach Mike Chrystie. “Chenango Valley has been a proven program for a number of years, and we wanted to show that our program is coming along.”
Over the last three games, Norwich has scored 124 points, or over 41 points a clip. You could say the Chrystie-led program is coming along nicely.
And the ease with which Norwich scored points against Chenango Valley was, at the least, surprising based on previous years’ encounters with the Warriors.
On the opening kickoff, Norwich was penned deep at its 14. On the second play from scrimmage, Tristan Rifanburg ripped off a 30-yard run to midfield. Two plays after that, Oralls found a seam, cut to the outside, and raced down the right sideline 44 yards for the score.
Four plays.
Eighty-six yards.
No problem.
Make no mistake, Chenango Valley may have been lacking in points on the scoreboard, but it did not lack for yards or possession time. CV drove 64 yards to Norwich’s 16 on its opening drive, but on a third-and-short, Norwich lineman Adrian Hoffman sacked quarterback Mark Mullins for an eight-yard loss. The fourth-and-14 pass attempt by Mullins was subsequently broken up by NHS defensive back Matt Parrella.
When the game’s outcome was still in question, Norwich came up with the big defensive plays it needed. Hoffman had two sacks, while Nick Murphy and Dan Conant had second-half sacks. Senior Jacob Perrone also had an interception, one that led to Perrone’s one-yard TD run to end the scoring in the fourth.
“We knew we couldn’t let our guard down because Chenango Valley comes in well prepared and is a well-coached team,” Chrystie said. “We were prepared for a dogfight, but we got out to an early lead, and we were able to maintain it the rest of the way.”
Oralls continued his touchdown-making ways with two more scores in the second stanza. After Cole Rifanburg converted a fourth down with a six-yard run, Oralls scooted 19 yards for his second TD. A 35-yard pass hookup, Rifanburg to Rifanburg, set up Oralls’ five-yard scoring run making it 21-0 at the half.
Norwich poured it on in the third quarter forcing CV into a three-and-out. The Rifanburg-to-Rifanburg connection yielded an 18-yard first down, Oralls ran for an even dozen yards, and four plays later, Cole Rifanburg called his own number on a two-yard scoring run for the four-TD lead.
The Warriors put together back-to-back scores in the third to make it interesting, but NHS answered with authority. Oralls’ final score, a five-yard jaunt, combined with Perrone’s interception and touchdown sealed the victory.
“We’re right where we want to be at the top of the division,” Chrystie said, whose club faces a much-improved Susquehanna Valley club next week. “Next week is definitely a big one. Not only is it a chance to clinch a playoff spot, but there is the potential to have a number one seed and a home playoff game.”
Notes: Oralls’ 100-yard rushing performance raised his season total to 758 yards…kicker Zan Stewart had four touchbacks to quiet the CV return game….The three kickoff returns the Warrriors did field resulted in a mere 9.3 yards per return. Norwich held a slim 339-328 advantage in total yards, although CV held a 26:47-21:13 edge in time of possession.
