Bobcats capture first MAC championship
Boys’ Soccer
Bainbridge-Guilford 3, Delhi 1
BAINBRIDGE – Until Friday, Bainbridge-Guilford had never won an outright division title in the MAC or Susquenango Association, and of course, had never won a league championship.
The Bobcats never have to say never again.
Using the same modus operandi that has generated 15 victories in 17 contests on the pitch, B-G answered a tying goal by Delhi with two of its own to claim the league championship.
The three goals were tallied by three different players, and three other players were credited with the assists. “It really has been a team effort (with scoring),” said longtime B-G coach Pete Feltham. “I think we’ve had 14 differerent goal scorers this year.”
Just to get into the league title game, B-G had to defeat Greene for a second time this season. Until this year, Bainbridge-Guilford had not beaten Greene in league play. Following that 3-1 win in sloppy conditions earlier in the week, Feltham said his club was not at peak efficiency for the league title game. “We have some kids working into different spots because of injuries, so it wasn’t as smooth as the game against Greene,” Feltham said. “It was a little squeaky, but we have a few days to work out the kinks before we play in sectionals.”
B-G led by a single goal at halftime. Aidan Nolan picked up the tally off a Jake Cuozzo pass.
Delhi’s Alex Cantwell knotted the game up for the Bulldogs before lanky B-G senior Kyle Hanvey broke the tie following a feed from Zach Smith. Dakota Johnson added a late insurance goal for the Bobcats.
“I think it was kind of a perfect storm this year,” Feltham said, noting his team has eight senior starters. “We had a lot of seniors coming back, and think some of the other teams may have lost some seniors. I think a lot of the league is young this year, but a young team like Delhi will learn from this.”
