Casting call for all Wee Witches and Wizards

NORWICH – In the spirit of all things frightful, The Chenango Arts Council is soliciting both talent and guts from community – seeking out those brave enough to face their fear of the spotlight for participation in “Wee Witches and Wizards of Norwich” event to be held at the Martin W. Kappel Theater.
For those who have never seized the opportunity to bask in the limelight, the stage can be all yours at this impromptu improv scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and continuing until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25.
A new twist on Halloween's gothic theme, the Chenango Arts Council is sounding the casting call to would-be thespians and stage readers alike – offering John and Jane Q. the chance to take the stage – and a mic – and divulge their scariest story to the unwitting.
“We want the community to know that this is their building too, and so we're developing a number of community enrichment activities that utilize the resources that we have at our disposal,” said Chenango Arts Council Executive Director Diane Batson-Smith.
Intentionally set for the hours leading up to the annual YMCA parade, organizers at the Council were eager to build on the framework of the day's festivities and give children as well as adults another reason to come out and celebrate the spooky occasion.
The event is centered around the reading of “The Lottery” by featured reader Judy McMahon starting at 2:30 p.m. followed by a Gothic-themed spoken work open mic that continues until 4:30 p.m.
From 4:30 p.m. onward, a best Halloween costume contest will prime paraders for their trek through Norwich streets during the evening's main event which begins at 7 p.m.
According to Smith, prizes will be awarded for the best story reading/stage performance and costume.
“Those wanting to enter our gothic story contest should RSVP by calling the Council of The Arts at 336-2787,” said Smith. “Our stage is open to everyone, and we hope to see a lot of new faces – children, teens and adults – around the theater,” she added.
Wee Witches and Wizards is presented in part with cooperation from the Norwich Theater Company with the generous support of the Mid York Press, Gilligan's Island, The Colonia Theater, Price Chopper, Dunkin' Donuts and The Parson's Daughter.
